Channel Seven’s ‘Boys’ Club’ Claims: Female Reporter Axed!
Laura Spurway is the latest Channel Seven star to be booted from the network.
This past week, I was absolutely stunned to find out that my favorite sports reporter was let go, a revelation shared through an internal communication from a colleague journalist.
Team, I wanted to inform everyone that I’ll be wrapping up for the day since I was informed my contract won’t be extended, as per the report in The Herald Sun.
I want to express my regret that I can’t meet everyone face-to-face, but I appreciate all the assistance and advice you’ve provided me with during the last four years.
Or
I apologize for not being able to meet each of you in person, but I am grateful for your help and guidance over the past four years.
‘I wish you all the best in your travels at Seven, Laura.’
It’s thought that the sports reporter, who joined the team in 2021, was let go to accommodate Xander McGuire, who recently joined the sports team.
According to The Herald Sun, these dismissals of prominent female executives have led some within the organization to worry that it could turn into a “men-only” or “brotherhood” type of environment.
Following Abbey Gelmi’s recent announcement that she will be departing her position at Channel Seven after nearly two years, it has occurred.
Since April 2022, I’ve had the honor of being the weekend sports newsreader. However, I shared with the Herald Sun on Friday that I am embarking on a new journey, marking a transition to the next phase in my career.
She expressed that her time at Seven has been filled with remarkable chances, but now seems the perfect moment to move on to a new phase.
‘I’m forever grateful for the experience and life long friends gained.’
Gelmi, who was recently named the new host for ABC’s Offsiders, shared that it was a joint agreement to end their association.
In a statement, Chris Salter, Director of Seven News, noted that Abbey has had extensive experience in reporting various sports events, ranging from the Olympics, Australian Football League (AFL), cricket, motor racing, and horse races.
She excels in everything she does, leaving Seven with enduring friendships. There’s no doubt that she will achieve great things in her future endeavors.

This month saw the termination of Ben Davis’s employment with Channel Seven in Queensland, where he had served as the head of sports for 30 years.
The veteran presenter, 50, confirmed that his contract has not been renewed.
Davis shared that management informed him they found no faults with his work, despite the expectation that he would wrap up his duties by the end of this month.
The actor, who is married and has three kids, shared on LinkedIn: ‘Undoubtedly, I feel let down that my contract with Seven News wasn’t extended, yet I was informed that this decision had no bearing on my performance, skills, or aptitude – it’s merely a business matter.’
Elsewhere in his post, Davis thanked viewers, family and colleagues.
He mentioned that the connections and bonds formed both on and off-screen continue to persist up until now, he added.
Following Sonia Marinelli’s announcement of her departure earlier this month, as a devoted admirer, I too find myself leaving, much like the changing weather in Melbourne’s weekends that she used to grace with her presence.
She announced that she’s moving on from her position at 7News, as she and her spouse have chosen to embark on a significant life change, which involves a shift towards coastal living.

We’ve been planning it for quite some time, but now we’re finally going: Our family of six is embarking on a journey along the eastern seaboard with our four little ones.
Having discussed the weather on television for much of my professional life, I’m eager now to step outside and experience it personally with the people I cherish the most.
Contrary to whispers suggesting a prominent broadcast network was dismissing a weather anchor, Seven confirmed to the Herald Sun that Marinelli chose to depart under her own conditions.
Marinelli is the latest in a series of popular presenters leaving Seven over the past year.
During the month of August, our seasoned reporter Steve Hart decided to make a move and join WIN News based in Wollongong.
His departure followed Shane Webcke’s shock exit from the sports news desk the previous week.

Amongst the team, I found myself one of seven individuals whose roles have been streamlined or eliminated due to the company’s cost-reduction measures over the last year.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been closely monitoring the recent changes within the media industry, and I can’t help but share my thoughts on Seven West Media’s decision to let go of 150 editorial staff members. This move, which affected some well-known faces such as Sharyn Ghidella, a respected newsreader from Queensland, and Paul Burt, an esteemed veteran weatherman, is certainly causing quite a stir. It’s always tough when talented individuals are impacted by such decisions, but it’s essential to adapt and evolve in today’s rapidly changing world of media.
In simple terms, the newly installed head of news and current affairs at Seven Network, Anthony De Ceglie, is swapping out regional section leaders with younger managers nationwide.
In each of Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, there are newly appointed news directors, while the positions of executive producer for Sunrise, Weekend Sunrise, and Spotlight have all been filled with fresh personnel.
