Channel Seven: Axed presenters Sharyn Ghidella and Paul Burt band together after their brutal sackings amid the network’s bloodbath and reveal their next career move
As someone who has spent over three decades in the competitive world of television journalism, I find myself deeply saddened by the recent turn of events at Channel Seven. The news of veteran talent like Maria Ghidella being let go is a stark reminder of the ruthless nature of the industry and the constant threat of job cuts that looms over us all.
Television colleagues Sharyn Ghidella and Paul Burt have shared their experiences with one another, following their dismissals from Channel Seven.
As a devoted follower of 7News in Queensland, I’ve been left reeling by the recent news that some of my favorite presenters were let go from the station. But even in the face of this setback, they’ve managed to rally together and show their solidarity. They’ve taken to social media to share words of encouragement with one another, all while taking playful jabs at the network. It’s a testament to their strong bond and unwavering spirit.
1. Last week, the weather forecasting position was eliminated for Burt, whereas Ghidella was let go earlier this month, marking her exit from the news industry after nearly four decades.
In his recent Instagram post, Paul Burt’s co-worker and show host, Ghidella, expressed a touching sentiment about their upcoming fishing project – an extension of the TV series titled “Step Outside with Paul Burt”.
1. “Wishing you the very best as you face new challenges! You’re incredibly skilled and talented, I have no doubt that there are thrilling experiences waiting for you. Keep up the good work – though I’m confident you won’t need it – and here’s hoping the job opportunities keep pouring in. Best wishes, [Name],” she wrote.
In his reply, Burt praised Ghidella for her dedication since she has represented Seven News in Queensland since 2007.
‘Thanks Sharyn, I can say the same for you my friend, who would’ve thought hey,’ he began.
I’ve had the fortune of knowing some remarkable individuals in my time, but none quite compare to you. With your salt-kissed skin and weathered eyes, you exude a charisma that outshines even the most brilliant beacons. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: those who let you go have truly missed out.
‘I’m grateful to call you a friend as we navigate new chapters together,’ Burt concluded.
Previously this month, Ghidella bid farewell from our TV screens. However, she has just disclosed her forthcoming professional decision.
The 58-year-old shared with The Courier Mail that she plans to take a short break of a few weeks for rest and rejuvenation before making any decisions about her future. She will still be involved in her philanthropic work, including her position on the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Foundation board.
On Saturdays finale, Burt delivered his weather report and made some criticisms directed at the network as he concluded his segment.
“Had I been given a choice, I wouldn’t have chosen this path. That’s just how things turn out when one gets fired,” he stated during the 6 o’clock news.
The bulletin then awkwardly cut to a montage of Paul presenting segments over the years.
He has worked for Ten, Nine and Seven during his lengthy media career.
Meanwhile, Ghidella confirmed the news of her job loss in a fiery Facebook post.
At last, while she was getting her hair done at the salon, she acknowledged that the long-awaited “tap on the shoulder” arrived for her. This moment brought a sense of “relief” following several weeks of uneasiness due to potential media job losses.
Instead, she refused to back down gently, focusing her efforts on criticizing the network for putting more importance on features like horoscopes, rather than retaining experienced personnel.
After working in television for 38 years, I’ve grown accustomed to the routine tap on the shoulder. Today, that anticipated tap actually came my way. – Ghidella started by saying this.
‘It wasn’t quite how I expected it to end at Channel Seven.
While I was busy getting my hair done for work at the salon, I received a surprising phone call. The news they shared left me stunned: after 17 dedicated years with the network, it was time for me to move on.
After some time, Ghidella expressed that her experience at the network had been quite unpleasant, and she was grateful for the opportunity to leave.
Reflecting on this choice, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions – a touch of sadness, yet also a sense of respite. Over the past few weeks, the television landscape, as you may have noticed, has been far from pleasant.
Many skilled, committed, and faithful employees have recently been let go, making for a lengthy goodbye in the seemingly drawn-out effort to reduce an excessive workforce by gradually parting ways with surplus staff.
Among the finest content producers in the industry are these individuals. Their skills are commendable, and it’s deeply unfortunate to observe their current situation.
1. Ghidella expressed her dislike for the network’s revamp of their news shows, where comedian Mark Humphries will perform a humorous segment at 6:57 PM tonight, followed by the debut of ‘Astro Tash’ presenting an astrology report starting next week.
“Ghidella added, ‘I don’t enjoy my nightly news mixed with humor or astrology either, and frankly, I think it’s about time for me to leave.'”
1. Just as I often express, the journey continues. There’s undeniably a wealth of skill within this place, and I wholeheartedly hope they thrive and prosper in the future.
1. She concluded her no-holds-barred message with a heartfelt thanks to the numerous friends she’s gathered during her extensive tenure at the network. (Alternatively, “She finished off her uncompromising post by expressing gratitude towards the many friends she built over her career with the network.”)
1. “I deeply appreciate everyone who has contributed to making this happen thus far, such as my past employers, the Stokes, Packer, and Gleeson families, as well as news directors, executive producers, and station managers. They provided me with an opportunity when I was just a kid from Babinda, rural Queensland. I am deeply indebted to you all.”
1. Apart from the audience, let me express my gratitude for your compassion and encouragement. It’s truly an honor and pleasure to share daily news with you and enter your homes.
Seven has seen a massive wave of cost reductions in its news department following new leadership.
1. Notable figures who have surfaced in the network lately are Robert Ovadia, Andrew Frampton, and Melbourne crime journalist Cameron Baud, affectionately nicknamed ‘The Harvester of Sorrow’ by friends on account of his frequent coverage of somber news events.
In Sydney, Ovadia (one of the highest-profile individuals let go before Ghidella), has declared his intention to file a complaint against Seven at the Fair Work Commission, alleging wrongful termination.
Daily Mail Australia exposed the fact that Ovadia reportedly shared a sequence of bizarre, manipulated photos with a young female journalist prior to his dismissal.
