Channel Seven addresses viewers’ concerns as star goes missing

It has been reported that Channel Seven has addressed speculation about the future of long-time news anchor, Rob Brough, following his absence from the screens since last August.

As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but buzz with rumors circulating in 2024 about the potential termination of our beloved 70-year-old icon on Seven, amidst the massive staff reductions that were sweeping through the network at the time. The thought sent shivers down my spine and left me yearning for reassurance!

Seven took to social media this month to announce that Brough is on extended leave.

As stated on the 7News Wide Bay Facebook page (cited in an article published by The Courier-Mail on Monday), it appears that Brough is not departing from his position, but rather is choosing to take some time off for personal reasons.

In the meantime, Nathan Spurling and Joanne Desmond have taken over Brough’s role as anchors for Seven’s local news broadcasts in the Sunshine Coast region, which includes Cairns.

The pair also co-anchor the news for Townsville, Rockhampton and Toowoomba.

The news comes after fans began commenting online about Brough’s absence.

A post on Reddit, published shortly after Brough’s departure, implied there could have been a dispute between him and the team members.

A user shared recently on an Australian forum that there’s a worker at the Sunshine Coast studio of Channel 7 who indicated that Broughy is not well-regarded by many staff members these days. Since Channel 7 has been reducing their newsreaders in Queensland, it makes one wonder if Broughy might be facing forced retirement soon.

A user contributed to the Reddit discussion with the statement, “There seems to be something happening with Rob. He’s our beloved newscaster, the sole reason we tune into 7 News. If he’s not returning, then I guess that’s all she wrote…

Daily Mail has reached out to Seven for comment.

In the 1970s, Brough kicked off his professional journey on the radio, later transitioning to TV positions at ABC and Channel Nine.

His popularity significantly increased when he got the coveted role as a game show host on the highly-rated Family Feud, which airs on Seven, in 1990.

In 1995, Brough stepped down from his role, but later resumed presenting regional news broadcasts for Seven in Queensland.
