Leila McKinnon has revealed the heartbreaking loss of her mother-in-law, Ann Gyngell.
On Saturday, the 53-year-old Channel Nine personality posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, celebrating an amazing woman and sharing a collection of personal family photos.
Leila, wife of former Nine executive David Gyngell, shared a heartfelt message describing Ann as a kind, loving, and supportive person.
Leila started by saying that a simple social media post didn’t feel like enough to honor her mother-in-law, who recently passed away, but she wanted to share a few memories anyway.
She revealed that Ann lived her life in vibrant colour, both literally and creatively.
Leila described Ann as someone who perceived the world vividly, even associating colors with days of the week. She noted that Ann channeled this unique creativity into her successful career as an interior designer, bringing beauty to homes across Australia.

She received a lifetime achievement award from the Design Institute of Australia, recognizing her significant impact on the field.
Ann’s early life was equally extraordinary.
Leila recounted how, at age six, she was evacuated from Singapore during a storm. She survived a dangerous sea journey, facing Japanese attacks along the way, and eventually arrived in Sydney – a city she instantly adored.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always been fascinated by stories of effortless style, and Ann’s had it in spades! It’s incredible to think that her natural glamour even caught the eye of Pierre Balmain himself. Apparently, while she was traveling in Sydney, the iconic designer personally asked her to model for him in Paris – a testament to her striking looks and poise.
She also forged a friendship with Hollywood icon Marlene Dietrich.
A famous Hollywood actor playfully gave a bath to Leila’s future husband when he was a young boy in Sydney around the mid-1960s.
Leila mentioned that her mother became a skilled artist later in life and generously volunteered as an art teacher at the Wayside Chapel.
The final images in Leila’s post showed Ann embracing her grandchildren with a warm smile.

She was more than just my mother-in-law; she was a truly kind and loving woman who always supported me. She was a dear friend, and my children adored her as their grandmother.
‘She will be dearly missed by us all. Vale beautiful Ann.’
Leila and David Gyngell, a media executive, got married in a small, private ceremony in 2004, with only their close friends and family present.
The couple went on to welcome two children together: son Ted and daughter Gwendolen.
