Channel Nine staff furious rising star journalists got passed over for lucrative Today hosting gig – as big wigs give the spot to a doctor instead
Enthusiastic journalists under the age of 30, working at Channel Nine, are said to be angry because the network allegedly chose someone else for a well-paid hosting position on The Today Show during the vacation season.
During the six-week break from ratings, the morning program frequently challenges emerging talents by putting them in the spotlight, testing their resilience in the hot seat, as regular hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo take a leave of absence.
During last Christmas and New Year’s, several rising stars were taken aback as they were overlooked for a temporary position, with Dr. Nick Coatsworth being chosen instead. This was reported by The Daily Telegraph on Sunday.
Dr Nick made a name for himself as a deputy chief medical officer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a specialist in infectious diseases, he frequently appeared before news cameras to share his expert insights on vaccination strategies and quarantine measures during the pandemic.
Currently, he can be seen sitting as the lead figure on Today, alongside journalist Lara Vella and newsreader Maggie Raworth. However, not all employees at Nine seem thrilled with his incorporation into the team.
According to a source, Dr. Nick is perceived as an uncomfortable host and isn’t particularly well-liked by the production team off-screen.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but scratch my head in bewilderment. With an abundance of talented contenders eager and capable of seizing the opportunity, it seems puzzling why this individual continues to be given such a prestigious hosting role in the future. It’s like they’re holding onto a secret stash of golden tickets!
According to another source, ‘Summer encourages experimentation, yet others might argue that Nine takes this experimentation a bit too far.’
Instead, they mentioned that it’s beneficial to guide junior team members and nurture future leaders, but Dr. Nick isn’t exactly doing that.
Daily Mail Australia have reached out to Nine for comment.
Apart from Karl (aged 50) and Sarah (aged 39), other individuals who have stepped into the successful hosting roles are Alison Piotrowski, Gavin Morris, along with Samantha Armytage – a former Sunrise host, and weatherman Dan Anstey.
Previously, there have been instances where Nine faced criticism for choosing Dr. Nick as a substitute host for Karl during his Christmas vacation.
During the 2023 summer break, it was allegedly displeasing for some cast members when Dr. Nick initially secured the role.
In my perspective, there was considerable discontent among many, including myself, when the medical expert was appointed as the host, as per The Australian’s report at the time.
During the previous Christmas season, regular Today show reporter Mia Glover took over as Karl’s usual co-host, replacing Sarah who is typically on the show.
Dr Nick has made several television appearances over the years as an infectious disease expert.
He currently presents the television show Do You Want To Live Forever? with Tracy Grimshaw
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I am proudly partnered with my exceptional wife, Dr. Rebecca Pearson – a dedicated lung transplant specialist. Together, we nurture our beautiful family of three wonderful children.
