Channel Nine exodus continues with AFL legend the latest to leave the network amid bloodbath
As a dedicated football enthusiast who has followed the sport for decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of melancholy as yet another AFL legend leaves Channel Nine. Leigh Matthews, a living football encyclopedia and one of the greatest players and coaches in the game’s history, is departing after a brief stint with Footy Furnace. His departure follows the exodus of other legends like Kane Cornes, Caroline Wilson, and Craig Hutchison to Channel Seven.
The on-going carnage on Channel Nine’s football television programming persists following the departure announcement by esteemed AFL figure, Leigh Matthews.
This year, Leigh Matthews has been with us, taking charge of the Footy Furnace show. However, he’ll be departing from the program on Sunday evening.
72-year-old Matthews, once a prominent football player but later shifting to coaching and commentary, is set to join Channel Seven prior to the 2025 sports season.
His leaving represents another obstacle for Channel Nine, coming after the recent departures of Kane Cornes, Caroline Wilson, and Craig Hutchison to Channel Seven.
On Mondays, I’m the lone representative left on Footy Classified, following the departures of my fellow panelists.
Matthew, acknowledged as the 20th century’s top player, has occasionally graced our screens since the ’90s. During this time, he also served as a panelist on the popular analysis program Talking Football.
Matthews has an extraordinary football career, having secured four championships as a coach – three with Brisbane from 2001 to 2003 and one with Collingwood in 1990 – and four more titles as a player with Hawthorn.
Currently, Channel Nine is looking to hire in multiple positions, but Eddie McGuire has tried to minimize the effects of the departures of long-serving personalities Caroline Wilson and Craig Hutchison, who have been part of the network for 18 years.
In an amusing interview on the Today show, he stated that at the end of the season, you should remove items cluttering your list and replace them with the rising stars instead.
McGuire stated, “That’s exactly what we’re working on. I initiated the project when I was in Sydney. It has been an amazing experience so far, and it’s wonderful that Channel Copycat is now featuring something we’ve been doing for 18 years on television.
According to a previous report by The Herald Sun, McGuire hinted that legal action might be forthcoming, following the departure of Football Classified panel members Kane Cornes, Caroline Wilson, and Craig Hutchison.
It’s been established that Kane has made his transfer, whereas it’s known that Caroline is still bound by her contract with Nine until December.
Her contract has a provision that prohibits her from starting at Seven until mid-2025.
At the Carbine Club Lunch held at Crown in Melbourne on Tuesday, Eddie remained uncertain whether the show would be aired that very evening, as he mentioned that tensions were escalating.
Tonight is Footy Classified, but we haven’t received confirmation yet about the guests. I’m currently awaiting a call to find out who will appear on the show.
‘Some legal action may be around the place, it’s all getting very hotted up.’
