Channel Nine executives make a staggering call with one of its highest profile names a victim of TV bloodletting – and it means ‘no one is safe’
As a seasoned journalist with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that I find myself utterly astonished by the audacity of Nine Network’s executives. The recent announcement of job cuts, coupled with their extravagant lifestyle choices, has left me more than a little bewildered.

Legendary TV personality, Liz Hayes, is reportedly facing termination from Network Nine, as executives are considering cancelling her popular true crime series, marking another high-profile departure.
Insiders from Channel Nine have disclosed that the esteemed journalist’s acclaimed program, Investigating Undercover with Liz Hayes, faced potential termination due to a review, as the network considered significant budget reductions leading to layoffs.
Long-term employees at Nine expressed surprise over the decision, especially since she had recently been nominated for a Silver Logie award for her role as host of the series.
One concerned network employee informed Daily Mail Australia that if they consider such actions appropriate for Liz Hayes’ program, then there seems to be no limit to what they might do.

Even though Hayes’ show no longer airs, the esteemed journalist will continue her career at the network where she started as a news reporter in the Sydney headquarters of Nine back in 1981.
It seems she won’t have a lot of free time after moving, as this change might allow her to go back to her usual reporting tasks for the network’s prominent 60 Minutes show.
In recent years, although Hayes continues to be the primary host, she has significantly decreased her appearances on the show, as she has been dedicating herself to creating her own investigative crime series instead.

The investigation into the shooting of Kumanjayi Walker by former Northern Territory police officer Zachary Rolfe, which was carried out diligently and fearlessly by our team, is a testament to the power of journalism in bringing truth to light and holding those in power accountable for their actions.
At Under Investigation, it’s truly gratifying when our efforts are recognized, considering we’re a compact yet powerful team. Our consistent goal is to shed light on complex and impactful cases, as stated by Hayes during that period.
Our initiative aims to shed light on challenging and often bleak narratives, yet it’s centered around seeking the truth above all else. Crucially, it provides an opportunity for the loved ones and family members of those affected to discover what transpired regarding their cherished ones.
While Hayes’ position within the network remains secure, it’s important to note that several members of the closely connected team associated with the program have unfortunately been let go from the network.
Nine declined to comment on the program’s fate.
Mike Sneesby, our manager, revealed that approximately 900 positions will be eliminated from the company due to a cost-reduction initiative worth $30 million.
As a dedicated enthusiast, I can’t help but share this news that resonates deeply with me: Our colossal workforce of nearly 5000 individuals is facing a shift. Approximately 200 positions, spanning our organization, may be impacted within Nine. This includes some vacant and part-time roles that might not be filled moving forward.
Since then, Sneesby has faced criticism for numerous instances of seemingly insensitive generosity during the budget reductions, such as his trip to Paris to bear the Olympic torch prior to the games.
He too faced criticism as he stayed at an upscale five-star hotel and spa located in Paris’s center, whereas the diligent reporters assigned to cover the Olympics were provided with affordable lodging in outlying areas instead.
The esteemed members of Nine’s executive group were likewise lodged at the luxurious, vine-adorned Le Pavilion de la Reine hotel and spa, nestled within the coveted Le Marais district of the city.
As a seasoned traveler who has stayed at countless hotels around the world, I must say that the hotel in question stands out as one of the most luxurious and well-located accommodations I have ever encountered. Its understated elegance, combined with discreet, world-class service, creates an atmosphere that is truly unparalleled.
Instead, working reporters and crews were housed in hotels at a significantly lower cost compared to their supervisor’s urban getaway, which was a substantial distance away.
The accommodation disparity led to a cringe-worth television encounter outside Sneesby’s hotel.
“The Nine chief politely declined a conversation with a reporter from Seven, as it didn’t seem to be an appropriate moment,” is one way to paraphrase this sentence in natural and easy-to-read language.
The reporter emphasized that it was clear, if Mr. Sneesby had held the torch the day before, as he brushed past him.
Despite the reporter’s persistent questioning, Mr. Sneesby continued his walk without saying a word.
The reporter posed this question: “Is it not suitable for you to be at a luxury hotel today, given that you let go of employees earlier?”
Maintaining a tight-lipped grimace Mr Sneesby attempted to dismiss the reporter.
‘I’m meeting my family and…’ he said.
The journalist inquired, “Since you seem to be in charge of a media company, is your presence here for business purposes or are you enjoying a vacation with your family?”
In simpler terms, they had to justify their action of sending The Block’s host, Scott Cam, on an expensive trip to Paris to advertise the new season amidst financial cutbacks within the network.
