Channel 5 announces name change

As a seasoned gamer and television enthusiast with over three decades of viewing under my belt, I must admit that I am quite intrigued by Channel 5’s decision to rebrand as simply ‘5.’ It seems like a bold move to streamline their branding and create synergy between the main channel and its streaming service.

Channel 5 has announced a name change, with the network being rebranded to 5.

According to Deadline, the broadcaster plans to simplify their brand identity, aiming to establish a harmonious relationship between their primary channel and their streaming platform that used to be known as My5.

In Q1 2025, we’ll reveal our new brand identity. Our revamped streaming platform will feature content from MTV, CBS, Comedy Central, plus movies and TV series from Paramount+.

Ben Frow, the Chief Content Officer at Paramount UK, stated that there’s a massive demand for Channel 5 content in the realm of streaming. The upcoming streamer will provide a more extensive and diverse selection compared to My5, featuring a wider variety of content such as new series, box sets, and programs in reality, drama, factual, and kids categories from various branches within the Paramount family.

Over the past three years, My5 viewing has experienced unprecedented expansion, and with an increasing number of our viewers embracing streaming, we believe now is the ideal moment to forge a significantly closer bond between our linear and streaming platforms,” said Sarah Rose, President of Channel 5 and UK Regional Lead for Paramount. In simpler terms, this means they want to strengthen the connection between their traditional TV service (linear) and their online streaming service.

“Beginning from 2025, we’ll enhance our offerings on Channel 5 with fresh, thrilling content and speedy channels. This expansion will be based on the popular homegrown shows that our viewers are fond of.”

The announcement was made only a day following the revelation of their Autumn lineup by the network, featuring shows like “All Creatures Great and Small”, “The Teacher”, “Dalgliesh” and “The Wives”, all scheduled for broadcast.
