Channel 4’s record-breaking British classic is getting a “blockbusting” reboot after 40 years
40 years after its initial airing, Channel 4 has verified that they are reviving one of their most popular dramas, “A Woman of Substance,” for a new take.
The three-act television series was adapted from Barbara Taylor Bradford’s 1979 novel, and it narrated the life of Emma Harte, portrayed by both Jenny Seagrove and Deborah Kerr. After spending many years in servitude, Emma embarked on building a retail empire.
Following its acclaimed run on Channel 4, they’ve officially announced plans for another series adaption of Bradford’s book. This upcoming revival will comprise eight exciting episodes.
Although no specific release date or cast information has been revealed as of now, Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley are set to write the script. In an exclusive conversation with The Sun, Katherine Jakeways expressed her enthusiasm about this upcoming project.
Jakeways, the showrunner, commented that he was a kid in the ’80s when “A Woman of Substance” was everywhere – on bookstands, coffee tables with glass tops, and even secreted under pillows with worn-out edges, as he put it.
I was eagerly yearning to join the Channel 4 remake filled with lush Yorkshire landscapes, hairspray, padded shoulders, and ample cleavage. Now, I’m overjoyed to return this grand tale of ambition, passion, and vengeance to its roots – Channel 4.
She went on to express her intention of giving due recognition to two prominent feminist figures – the indomitable Emma Harte and Barbara Taylor Bradford, the very embodiment of a Woman of Substance,” she said further.
According to Ollie Madden, Film4 and Channel 4 Drama’s Director, Emma Harte’s unique ability lies in making men underestimate her, which he finds fascinating. Witnessing her transform from a maid into a mogul over the years is expected to be just as gripping and entertaining as it is thought-provoking and timely.
We’re absolutely thrilled to re-imagine Barbara Taylor Bradford’s timeless masterpiece with the help of Katherine and Roanne’s captivating screenplays. We’re collaborating closely with our longtime associates at The Forge on this endeavor.
In the original show, it’s said that more than 13 million people tuned in for its finale, which featured actors like Barry Bostwick, Christopher Guard, Barry Morse, Miranda Richardson, and a then-young Liam Neeson on the cast.
A Woman of Substance has no release date yet.
