Channel 4’s “gritty” British crime drama from Line of Duty team will be ‘worth the wait’ on Netflix

The enigmatic mystery-thriller series “The Gathering,” broadcast on Channel 4, is now available in Netflix’s ‘don’t miss it’ category.

The award-winning drama is set to premiere on the streamer on August 25th. Hailing from World Productions, the production house responsible for the popular BBC series “Line of Duty” and Sky Atlantic’s “Save Me”.

In summary, the storyline of “The Gathering” revolves around a brutal assault on a young girl at a rave party on an isolated island during high tide. The narrative unfolds in Merseyside and explores a diverse group of teenagers who could potentially be responsible for the crime, as well as their parents, all of whom raise reasonable suspicions.

In this production, Sadie Soverall and Eva Morgan take on the main roles of gymnastics competitors Jessica and Kelly. Vinette Robinson, Warren Brown, Richard Coyle, and Sonny Walker also feature prominently as secondary characters.

Although the live audience for The Gathering was small and it ultimately got cancelled, its first season garnered positive reviews from critics.

In the review penned by The Telegraph, it’s noted that the primary actors, mostly hailing from the region, deliver convincing performances using genuine Liverpudlian accents. Morgan, who recently graduated from drama school, is highlighted as a surprising and valuable addition to the team, having been discovered just a year ago.

The Observer observed that the storyline was unpredictable at times, and the conclusion seemed contrived. However, they were greatly impressed by the authentic and intense emotional interactions among the younger characters, as if they were portraying genuine, unfiltered lives.

In the meantime, the Irish Examiner enthusiastically commented: “This series is engagingly gritty,” further stating: “The attention to detail is impressive. Liverpool provides a captivating setting, depicting both its rough edges and polished facets. The actors convincingly portray their characters and their reasons are relatable.

After the series got cancelled, its executive producer, Simon Heath, explained to The Sun that although it did exceptionally well on Channel 4, the channel now has different decision-makers with fresh goals, making a second season unlikely.

A representative from Channel 4 expressed their immense pride in the success of “The Gathering” and all it has accomplished. They noted that the show highlighted local voices, not only on-screen but also behind the scenes, and received acclaim for its accurate portrayal of Liverpool and Merseyside.

The Gathering will be available to stream on Netflix from 25 August.
