Channel 4 reveals future of daytime hit A Place in the Sun after string of cost-saving cuts
As someone who has spent years working in television production, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness as I read about the cancellation of Channel 4’s hit show “Scared of the Dark.” Having seen firsthand the effort and resources that go into creating a successful series, it’s disheartening to know that despite its impressive viewership numbers, the powers that be have decided against renewing it for another season.
1. “Channel 4 has disclosed plans for the upcoming season of its hit daytime series A Place in the Sun, as part of the network’s cost-cutting measures by trimming down various shows.”
Fans of the property program can rejoice, as both the show itself and its sibling series have been renewed for another season.
Surprisingly, the bosses have given the go-awaited approval for a fresh installment of A Place in the Sun’s sequel series, titled “What Happened Next.”
In this spin-off series, hosts like Laura Hamilton, Leah Charles-King, and Jasmine Harman journey back through time, catching up with individuals they assisted in past home moves.
1. The hosts travel overseas to reconnect with individuals they assisted in settling down in a different nation, learning about their progress since then.
The first series of A Place in the Sun: What Happened Next, featuring ten episodes, received a favorable response from audiences.
Commissioner Jo Street of Daytime expressed: “The dear show ‘A Place in the Sun’ is deeply cherished by its viewers, who are keenly interested in the outcomes of the house-hunters even after filming concludes.”
‘What a treat to catch up and see what happened when that offer was finally accepted.’

Michelle Heeley, our seasoned Executive Producer, commented: “It’s a pleasure to check in again with those house buyers who have successfully settled into their sunlit abodes.”
1. “It fills us with immense joy to have been part of transforming numerous lives. This is a reflection of the tireless dedication shown by our production team and presenters throughout the last 23 years. We eagerly anticipate sharing what’s coming up next with our viewers.”
1. Numerous past home seekers are basking in the sunlight and embracing a leisurely tempo, while some have been tirelessly renovating barns, reintroducing nature, living sustainably, managing bed-and-breakfasts, and working more diligently than before.
A Place in the Sun is a firm fan-favourite, being one of the longest-running series on Channel 4.
It has now been on air for more than 21 years.
The spin-off’s recommission comes amid Channel 4 axing a string of shows this year.
The broadcaster also revealed back in January plans to make hundreds of staff redundant.
Channel 4 is giving up its long-time London headquarters at Horseferry Road and is now searching for a new office location in the city. (Since 1994 has been the base of operations for Channel 4 at this address.)
Back in June, it was made public that five popular music channels – 4Music, The Box, Kiss, Magic, and Kerrang! – would be temporarily shutting down.
A representative for Channel 4 informed The Sun: “Starting July 1st, we’re shutting down our Box networks as part of Channel 4’s digital-first strategy called Fast Forward. These channels no longer bring in a significant enough profit.”
I’m deeply committed to adapting our approach to the evolving landscape of television consumption, which is clearly undergoing a generational shift. To achieve this, I plan on trimming expenses, particularly in traditional linear activities, so we can channel those savings towards prioritizing digital initiatives. By doing so, we’ll remain competitive amidst an increasingly crowded marketplace filled with global entertainment conglomerates and social media giants.
Recently, a few shows on the channel, such as SAS: Who Dares Wins and Steph’s Packed Lunch, have been canceled due to cost-cutting measures.
The first season of Danny Dyer’s hit show Scared of the Dark has unexpectedly been canceled, much to the disappointment of its large viewership.
I once had the opportunity to be part of an intriguing television experiment where renowned personalities were invited to spend a week in absolute darkness, facing a series of engaging tasks.
Paul Gascoigne, a previous football star, emerged as the victor in the competition following his successful completion of an eight-day long stint in absolute darkness. He outperformed Chloe Burrows from Love Island, ex-boxer Chris Eubank, and comedian Chris McCausland during the challenge.
Channel 4 drew over a million viewers, but they have chosen not to renew it for a second season, as reported by Deadline.
Meanwhile Channel 4’s Hollyoaks will also have fewer episodes airing each week from September.
The soap that is broadcast on 4OD, E4, and YouTube will have its episode count reduced from five to three per week.
According to the channel’s analysis of their own data from Channel 4, making this change is the best approach to maintain the interest of existing heartland viewers and draw in new audiences in a competitive media landscape with an abundance of content.
The latest show to fall victim to the cuts is BAFTA-nominated documentary series Banged Up.
In the first season, we had a stellar cast that included Sid Owen from EastEnders, Marcus Luther from Gogglebox, and journalist Peter Hitchens of The Mail.
1. In October 2023, the premier of a four-part documentary series took place, showcasing a team of famous men who temporarily traded their regular routines for life within the closed walls of the disused Shrewsbury Prison during its initial broadcast.
For eight consecutive days, the subjects lived in isolation and were housed in individual cells. They were assigned tasks and underwent regular body checks by authentic former prison guards and ex-convicts.
1. Its influence was significant enough to secure a nomination for a BAFTA Award in the category of Best Reality Show; however, Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge took home the prize instead.
Well, I can hardly contain my excitement, but it seems the show, which we all adored, is not coming back. They’ve labeled it a ‘unique social experiment’, leaving us to wonder if there might be a chance of a reboot or sequel in the future. Fingers crossed!
