Good news for fans of Celine Song! Her new film, Materialists, will be available to stream on HBO starting November 7th. And that’s not all – her critically acclaimed debut film, Past Lives, which received Oscar nominations in 2023, will also be available to watch.
Celine Song’s film, Past Lives, is a deeply moving story about what could have been. It follows Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), two childhood friends who reconnect after two decades of separation, having lost touch when Nora’s family moved from South Korea to America. Following the success of Past Lives, A24 again collaborated with Song to create another unique romance, Materialists.
The critically acclaimed film Past Lives will no longer be available on Netflix after November 1st. It will then be streaming on HBO Max starting November 2nd, just before the arrival of another popular movie, Materialists. Materialists was a huge hit this summer, becoming the most successful film yet from director Celine Song and a major success for A24, and features a star-studded cast including Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.
Unlike Past Lives, Materialists centers on a matchmaker in New York City (Johnson) who finds herself choosing between a wealthy businessman (Pascal) and her former actor boyfriend (Evans). While Materialists didn’t receive the same critical praise as Past Lives and likely won’t be nominated for any Oscars in 2026, it’s still a well-made film by Song.
Having two of Song’s popular films available on the same streaming service so close together could reignite interest in her unique approach to filmmaking, beyond just the movie Materialists. It’s definitely worth watching both and comparing how they explore themes of regret and the importance of possessions in relationships, really thinking about what the characters are feeling.

Greta Lee, who gained recognition for her role in ‘Past Lives,’ is now receiving praise for ‘Tron: Ares,’ even though the film itself has some issues. Her co-star, Song, is currently developing a new drama series about competitive gaming with A24 and HBO, called ‘Damage.’ Although fans enjoy seeing her in romantic roles, she’s set to deliver another compelling story to audiences soon.
Both Past Lives and Materialists are finding success on HBO Max, and are likely encouraging viewers to watch both films. With Materialists doing well this summer, it’s a great time to explore the full range of director Celine Song’s work as she begins new and innovative projects.
