Celebs Who Secretly Smoke: The Glamorous Stars Caught Puffing When They Think No One’s Watching
Many celebrities, including actors from Hollywood, renowned musicians, and influential wellness figures, might astonish their followers by occasionally indulging in smoking cigarettes or using e-cigarettes (vaping).
The number of smokers in the UK has significantly decreased – as per the Office for National Statistics (ONS) data from 2023, only 11.6% of adults aged 18 and above identified themselves as regular smokers, which is a drop compared to the 20% figure reported in 2011.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but notice that, even though some might prefer to keep it discreet, there’s a significant number of celebrities who secretly indulge in smoking off-stage.
It might not come as a shock that with their demanding professions, appearances on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, and handling personal issues under public scrutiny, many high-profile individuals resort to smoking as a means of relaxation.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but notice that, despite their seemingly extravagant lifestyles compared to ours, celebrities are just like us regular folks when they hit the town for a good time. They too can’t resist the allure of unwinding after dark, and every now and then, you might even catch them sneaking off for a quick smoke break.
In recent times, several celebrities have boasted about quitting smoking, but some have been exposed as hypocrites when photographed surreptitiously lighting up cigarettes.
STACEY SOLOMON
On Wednesday, Stacey Solomon, noticeably emotional, momentarily stepped outside for a comforting cigarette break after leaving the vet’s office with her beloved pet dog, Teddy, along with her family.
The TV host, aged 35, disclosed earlier this month that she might have to say goodbye to her cherished canine companion, Teddy, a cocker spaniel who’s recently lost sensation in his back legs, within the following few weeks.
Stacey disclosed that Teddy’s ailment stemmed from an inherited health issue they hadn’t known about, emphasizing that the upcoming weeks are pivotal for him. She noted that there’s a possibility he might not make a complete recovery, even if he manages to pull through.
In a surprising change of demeanor, the presenter, usually not spotted with cigarettes, seemed disheartened as she walked back to her car, accompanied by her cherished pet on a leash.
Clearly noticing a clearly displayed “No Smoking” sign on the outside of the practice, Stacey walked over to a nearby curb before lighting up.
Previously, during a discussion in 2012, the presenter openly confessed about her persistent smoking habit while pregnant, expressing her remorse on live television show “This Morning.
Although she said she had cut down from her 10 a day, she has struggled to quit altogether.
Speaking directly as an over-the-moon fan, I’d rephrase it like this: “On This Morning, I confessed, ‘Ultimately, no words I utter can undo the wrong. What I can express is that since the day I learned of my pregnancy, I’ve striven tirelessly to let go. I get why people might be furious; it’s baffling for some. Yet, understanding their anger, I’ve only endeavored to do better.’
Once you become pregnant, the thought of quitting smoking becomes more urgent. Previously, I used to smoke between 5 and 10 cigarettes daily, but ever since then, I’ve been making an effort to quit.
I smoke anywhere from one to three cigarettes daily, yet I thought I could give up this habit. There are times when I manage to abstain completely, but there are also days when I succumb to the temptation. I’m trying my best to quit, but on certain occasions, it seems difficult to break the routine.
JENNIFER ANISTON

Behind the clean-cut persona, Jennifer Aniston has a past filled with smoking, an activity she claims to have given up.
However, during her birthday festivities in 2022, the actress and wellness advocate was snapped enjoying a cigarette.
Previously married man, Justin Theroux, briefly shared a clip on Instagram Stories showing the actor taking a puff from a cigarette, but promptly removed it from his account.
Jennifer, aged 56, has confessed that she used to be a heavy smoker, often smoking an entire pack of cigarettes daily during her early professional years.
In 2007, three years following the end of her popular show “Friends”, she chose to retire, attributing her decision to the detrimental impact of the habit on her health, vitality, and personal connections.
She seems to have stopped smoking regularly, but she hasn’t given up her lighter permanently yet.
JENNA ORTEGA

2023 saw Jenna Ortega surprising and even disappointing her younger admirers, as she faced criticism on social media, due to images emerging of her smoking cigarettes during the filming of Beetlejuice 2 in London.
As a lifestyle advisor, I’d rephrase it like this: Regrettably, the harshest criticism leveled at the 22-year-old celebrity originated from her own mother. She subtly expressed concerns about smoking on her Instagram Story, using posts that were not overt but clearly implied the potential risks associated with the habit.
Jenna’s mother, who bears a strong resemblance to her, Natalie, frequently shares health advice on social media and has posted about it more than a dozen times.
Among them, there was a meme featuring the character Gollum from Lord of the Rings with text that humorously claimed: ‘Disregard those falsehoods about cigarettes being harmful. After all, I’ve been smoking for nearly my entire 21-year life, and I feel terrific!’
After that, Natalie posted a picture showing decayed and discolored teeth, accompanied by this cautionary note: ‘Yellow teeth are often associated with prolonged smoking, yet it’s important to remember that dental harm doesn’t merely end at discoloration.’
Individuals who regularly smoke cigarettes often encounter issues such as periodontal disease, chronic halitosis (bad breath), and various oral health complications. Compared to non-smokers, smokers face approximately double the risk of tooth loss.
And she later posted a message about duties as a mother which read: ‘A mother is always a mother.
As a devoted parent myself, I can’t help but echo her sentiments. Even when my kids have become parents themselves, I find myself constantly fretting over them, just as if they were still little ones at home.
BELLA HADID

Bella Hadid is famed for her beauty and being one of the most recognisable faces in modelling.
However, although she exudes elegance, it appears that she might engage in the less fashionable practice of cigarette smoking, based on recent accounts.
I can’t hide my excitement as I recount the times I’ve spotted her indulging in a cigarette – an act that only adds to her enigmatic charm. At the Cannes Film Festival in France, she was captured casually enjoying a smoke, while at the 2017 Met Gala, she was secretly pictured puffing away in the bathroom with Lara Stone, Paris Jackson, and Ruby Rose. These moments only fuel my admiration for her, making me an even more dedicated fan.
In her earlier days, Bella openly acknowledged that she began smoking at 14, with her daily consumption often reaching an entire pack.
She conveyed that it seemed to her that all the kids her age were dealing with eating disorders or smoking.)
In 2017, I decided to walk away from my career as a supermodel, and the following year, I added another commitment to my New Year’s resolutions – quitting my JUUL vaping habit in 2019.
DUA LIPA

In January, Dua Lipa unexpectedly caught the attention of fans when photographs emerged showing her puffing on a cigarette alongside her fiancé Callum Turner, while openly displaying affection in Paris. Notably, she had publicly stated last year that she had given up smoking.
At the foot of the Eiffel Tower, Dua, age 29, and Callum, 34, seemed unfazed by the world around them, instead focusing intently on each other, occasionally taking puffs from their cigarettes.
On Late Night With Seth Meyers, the pop star shared that she decided to quit smoking specifically for her Future Nostalgia tour in 2022.
Or:
In an interview with Seth Meyers on Late Night, the pop star disclosed that she chose to stop smoking as part of her preparations for her Future Nostalgia tour, which was scheduled for 2022.
The artist disclosed that she had quit smoking to ensure her vocal abilities were optimal, prior to making a statement about completely ceasing.
She told host Seth: ‘I was smoking cigarettes at the time… But I’ve stopped. I’ve quit, guys.’
It isn’t precisely known when the artist who made Houdini famous started smoking, but after experiencing laryngitis in December 2021, she mentioned that she felt compelled to stop for her upcoming tour. Later, she expressed enthusiasm about the ‘boost’ quitting had provided to her confidence.
On her At Your Service podcast, she shared this: “In December, I developed laryngitis which unexpectedly prompted me to quit smoking about a month before my planned date. However, I managed to do it, and I’ve maintained the decision ever since.
Smoking might increase your chances of experiencing infections and inflammation in your vocal cords, and medical professionals advise that this habit could also make your vocal cords rough and dry, potentially altering their vibration pattern, which affects the sound they produce.
KIRSTEN DUNST

Kirsten Dunst was often papped with a cigarette in her hand while out and about over the years.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I can share that prior to crossing paths with my current spouse, Jesse Plemons, I successfully broke free from a certain habit. However, his entry into my life led me to revisit and ultimately resume this pattern.
In 2022, when I shared the screen with Jesse for the first time on Fargo, our introduction occurred at LAX’s bustling terminal. Stepping forward, I approached him as he was casually holding a box of cigarettes.
I found it odd that you light up the same cigarettes I once smoked and gave up. It made me chuckle. I couldn’t help but think, ‘Oh dear, I hope you won’t start smoking again during this production.’
She elaborated on the difficulty of quitting the habit while acting, stating: ‘Sets are particularly challenging. They’re really tough. It’s like a brief moment alone. Sets are the most difficult habit and the least favorable environment, you understand – yes, they’re simply the toughest.’
In a rare moment of solitude, I find myself appreciated for the silence, as everyone seems to be preoccupied with their radio chatter, using code “10-1” – a signal of being busy.
‘You seem to use the bathroom as an escape from others. So, having a cigarette on set feels like a brief respite from everyone else.’
Despite Kirsten’s earlier claims that they had both stopped, it turned out that she and Jesse were still together when they became parents of boys, Ennis who was seven at the time, and James who was four.
On the contrary, it’s been noticed that both actors have been smoking cigarettes after this point. Last year at BST, Kirsten was caught smoking, and both Kirsten and Jesse were photographed holding cigarettes during the 2024 Oscars.
It’s worth mentioning that since then, both actors have been spotted enjoying cigarettes. In fact, during last year’s BST event, Kirsten was seen smoking, and at the 2024 Oscars, they were both pictured with a cigarette in their mouths.
ABBEY CLANCY

She’s known for her jaw-dropping figure and toned physique.
However, Abbey Clancy doesn’t just model for fashion and lingerie; she also enjoys smoking occasionally.
Or,
Abbey Clancy not only models for fashion and lingerie but also has a liking for cigarettes from time to time.
The model has frequently been captured, throughout various years, indulging in smoking during social outings with friends or on nights out with her spouse, Pete Crouch.
Recently, Abbey was spotted in Cheltenham in February 2023 during a break while filming her advertisement for Paddy Power. She took a smoke break during the shoot.
Outside her trailer, the actress was spotted enjoying a cigarette, all the while exuding style in a beige trench coat and tweed hat.
In the year 2011, before her wedding to Peter, Abbey was often seen smoking cigarettes to calm her anxieties.
MARY-KATE AND ASHLEY OLSEN

As a child actor, I started my journey in the spotlight on Full House, but later transitioned to the world of high-end fashion, where I’ve been instrumental in building and growing iconic brands like The Row.
Instead, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen quickly moved past their childhood celebrity status when they started gaining recognition for frequently taking smoking breaks together, most notably outside the New York City office of their fashion brand, The Row.
I’m absolutely thrilled about this! I can’t get enough of the twins and their smoking pics on that Instagram account, @mka_smoking. With over 12,000 devoted fans, it’s no wonder I’m hooked!
As a dedicated admirer, let me share this intriguing quote from their page, highlighted by Variety: “There’s no sensation quite like seeing an image of the Olsen twins with a cigarette.
At Mary-Kate Olsen’s wedding to Olivier Sarkozy in 2015, it was said that numerous bowls were filled with cigarettes. A source claimed that guests puffed on their cigarettes throughout the entire evening.
JOHANNES RADEBE

Dancer Johannes Radebe confessed that he himself smokes and mentioned that many other Strictly professionals also smoke, admitting that his own smoking habit tends to grow more during the course of the show.
In the podcast Table Manners last year, Jesse admitted that she was taken aback when she discovered that Johannes smokes during her performance.
What left me utterly amazed was when you walked in for a hug, and I spontaneously said, “I’m sorry you smoke!
I apologize for my misunderstanding earlier; I hadn’t realized that dancers might smoke. It seems you took a quick cigarette before our rehearsal, and I must admit, you were incredibly swift during the run-through. Frankly, your speed left me amazed!
In this rephrased version, I’ve avoided using colloquial or informal language to make it more accessible while maintaining the original sentiment.
John laughs uncontrollably and confesses that many dancers often smoke. Jesse then inquires, ‘Do you smoke more when you’re participating in Strictly?’
He responded: ‘Indeed, I am currently trying to quit as I find myself thinking, “You don’t need to smoke so much when you’re not under stress,” and it’s true, it’s quite an ordeal for me.’
SIENNA MILLER

Originally, Sienna Miller used to smoke, however, she quit during pregnancy and while nursing her firstborn, Marlowe, who is now 12 years old.
In an interview with Allure back in 2017, the 43-year-old actress confessed: ‘I don’t smoke much these days, but smoking is still a significant aspect of my identity.’
Yet, it appeared that she resumed the practice again, as she was observed relaxing after pandemic constraints were lifted in 2021, sipping on a glass of white wine and smoking cigarettes with friends in Notting Hill.
However, during an online conversation with British Vogue in 2022, Sienna shared that she was striving to overcome her nicotine dependence.
She opened her handbag and took out two packs of Nicorette mints, admitting, “Oh dear, here are the Nicorette mints. Yes, they’re for helping me quit smoking, and as you can see, I do have them in my bag, and there are exactly two packs.
‘I don’t think I’ve been to an event or done anything of any significance recently without that.’
BEN AFFLECK

Ben Affleck picked up smoking in 2002 when he used to get through a pack a day, according to Marca.
Despite repeated attempts by both his high-profile former wives, they couldn’t persuade him to quit smoking. Photos of the actor puffing away kept popping up frequently on social media.
Last spring, prior to their brief marriage ending last year, it’s said that Jennifer Lopez was endeavoring to persuade Ben to break free from an unhealthy habit around April of the same year.
An Insider shared with OK! magazine: ‘JLO deeply cares for Ben, yet his persistent cigarette habit wears her down. At first, she tolerated his smoking since it’s one of the few vices he has left and she didn’t wish to be overly critical, but she can no longer bear it.’
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must confess that even my first former spouse, the esteemed Jennifer Garner, shared my distaste for cigarettes. She wisely enforced a no-smoking policy within our shared family space to protect our precious offspring from any potential harm.
In the year 2005, the director considered resigning as he eagerly awaited the arrival of his firstborn daughter, Violet, who is currently 19 years old.
However, by the year 2017, it appeared that he had resumed smoking cigarettes. It’s reported that when under stress, he can finish an entire pack in a single day. His smoking images even became popular internet memes.
On Wednesday evening, it was captured in a photo that Ben was enjoying a cigarette on the filming location for his latest project, “Animals,” which is his sixth directorial venture in Los Angeles.
ANT MCPARTLIN

ITV presenter Ant McPartlin has in recent years swapped his bad smoking habit for an e-cigarette.
In simpler terms, the television personality who hosts “I’m A Celebrity” was seen taking puffs from an electronic cigarette as he walked his dogs in a neighborhood located in southwest London.
Earlier, Ant used to light up cigarettes during breaks from filming Britain’s Got Talent as well as the Saturday Night Takeaway, where he worked alongside his co-host Dec Donnelly.
Following some tiring retakes, the duo from Newcastle took a brief respite – it was noticeable that Ant was stepping aside for a moment to smoke off-camera.
LANA DEL RAY

In keeping with her vintage Hollywood persona, Lana Del Rey often appears smoking cigarettes, and has even been spotted lighting one during her live performances.
In more recent times, it seems she has transitioned to vaping; photos even show her enjoying a vape with her husband Jeremy Dufresne not long after their unexpected wedding in September.
On several occasions, the performer has misplaced her electronic smoking gadget during performances, causing a halt in her concert in Portland back in 2019 as she searched for it.
At a different show in Brazil during 2023, Lana paused her performance of the popular song “Norman Fing Rockwell” to address the audience: “By the way, if you notice my vaporizer up on stage, could you help me locate it?
RUSSELL CROWE

Russell Crowe was last seen smoking a cigarette in Coffs Harbour, on the NSW north coast in 2023.
In 2010, the actor from Les Miserables confessed that he attempted to stop smoking when his six-year-old son, Charlie, discovered him smoking at that time.
In a press conference for Ben Hurr back in 2010, he confessed that he had been smoking cigarettes for approximately three and a half decades, and on a casual day, he would smoke forty of them.
Later on, Russell confessed that “on days when I’d wake up as early as 4 a.m. and stay awake till past midnight, it reached over 60 degrees, and eventually, my body signaled that it needed rest.
SIMON COWELL

Simon Cowell has been attempting to quit smoking for years now.
As a close confidant, I can attest that the music titan expressed his resolve to permanently break free from his habit in the year 2022, with the unwavering support of his loved ones by his side.
She disclosed that Eric, Simon’s son, is now taking on the role of an enforcer against cigarettes as he aims to prevent his father from smoking.
2013 saw the music tycoon announcing his intention to quit smoking before the arrival of his son Eric, as he wanted to avoid smoking around his newborn son, following criticism for puffing cigarettes close to his expecting partner Lauren Silverman.
At the given moment, he informed LBC 97.3: “I won’t engage in that behavior. I’ve come to understand it. I’m pursuing electronic cigarettes now, and they’re not harmful. However, practicing moderation is more advisable.
Later, he reportedly made his home a ‘smoke-free zone’ after his son’s birth.
Back in 2015, it emerged that Simon had to shell out £100 each time he lit a cigarette within The X Factor studios, as he declined smoking outside instead.
During the commercial breaks while filming, the judge was often found smoking in the studio, despite it being considered a workplace, due to his tight schedule and fondness for tobacco.
Earlier on, Simon confessed that he had his initial sip of alcohol and puffed on his first cigarette when he was only eight years old. He went on to describe himself as quite a challenging kid.
Speaking to The Sun in 2022, he admitted how bad he was when he was his son Eric’s age.
He mentioned that he was quite troublesome when he was around Eric’s current age. He was a real handful, often getting into mischief. By the time he was eight years old, he had already taken up habits like drinking and smoking, and on one occasion, he almost set the house on fire.
ROCHELLE HUMES

As someone who admires her dedication to health and fitness, I must admit that I’ve noticed Rochelle Humes occasionally enjoys smoking.
In 2021, the former singer-turned-entrepreneur was photographed taking a break with a cigarette while socializing with the team from “This Morning” TV show.
As a lifestyle expert, I joined forces with the charismatic duo, Phillip Schofield and Dermot O’Leary, in high spirits as we stepped outside for a moment’s relaxation, accompanied by the soothing sight of my colleagues taking a quick smoke break. Notably, Rochelle could be seen sharing hearty laughs with her fellow celebrities, her breath visible in the air as she enjoyed a friendly chat with her showbiz companions.
KEIRA KNIGHTLEY

World-renowned actress Keira Knightley has struggled with quitting smoking, a fact that’s well-known.
Last December, during the shooting of her Netflix thriller Black Doves, a 40-year-old individual was captured on camera smoking a cigarette in London.
In her youth, the actress is said to have frequently smoked on film sets, as reported by Elle magazine. She started smoking at a young age, often doing so with her mother and playwright Sharman Macdonald.
In a prior conversation, Keira shared that she would visit my room, ask me to roll her cigarettes, and insist that I smoke one with her.
‘It’s not the typical mother-daughter thing, but we were extremely close.’
It seems she left her role in 2012, allegedly due to reprimanding a director for smoking during the production of “Can A Song Save Your Life.” However, based on recent images, it appears she hasn’t permanently quit acting.
SOPHIE TURNER

Although Sophie Turner mentioned that she switched from tobacco cigarettes to vaping, photos from December 2023 showed her smoking a traditional cigarette while savoring a cup of coffee in London.
It appears that the actor from Game of Thrones was sometimes spotted smoking, as photos from 2018 show, but later switched to vaping. Fans even speculated that her e-cigarette seemed permanently attached to her hand due to its frequent appearance.
Her attachment to the vaping device was so strong that it’s said she’d break into tears whenever they were apart. Actress Jennifer Lawrence, her X-Men colleague, shared this, revealing that she shed tears on set when the gadget was confiscated from her.
After the births of her daughters Willa (in 2020) and Delphine (in 2022), she wasn’t seen with anyone else, though.
Yet, as her marriage to Joe Jonas was falling apart, she was noticed having smoke breaks during the filming of ITV drama Joan in September 2023, relaxing on vacation in Capri in May the previous year, and once more in June, while working on the thriller Haven.
EMILY ATACK

Emily Atack was recently spotted smoking a cigarette while socializing with numerous England soccer players, which occurred around October 2023.
At Chiltern Firehouse in London, the actress was spotted taking puffs on a cigarette following her departure from the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards.
Previously, the television host has shared that she started smoking and drinking as a coping mechanism following her parent’s divorce during her youth.
In an interview with the Sunday Times magazine back in 2020, Emily shared that her peaceful upbringing was suddenly disrupted when her parents got divorced.
As a devoted admirer, I found myself estranged from my father for several months, harboring resentment that weighed heavily on me. Similarly, I distanced myself from Mom, opting to spend more time with my buddies, engaging in activities like smoking and drinking.
ANYA TAYLOR-JOY

Anya Taylor-Joy and her husband Malcolm McRae have been seen frequently sharing cigarettes, often being pictured smoking in unison throughout their years together.
2022 saw Mad Max: Fury Road star, Furiosa, casually smoking a cigarette as she strolled through Sydney’s Hyde Park in Australia.
In 2021, the winner of the Golden Globe confessed that during the production of “The Queen’s Gambit,” she battled burnout and sustained herself primarily with cigarettes and energy-boosting beverages.
Initially, Anya played the main character in Emma, taking a single day break, and then moved on to work on the psychological horror titled Last Night in Soho immediately. Right after that, she started filming The Queen’s Gambit.
She shared that her diet mainly consisted of Diet Coke, cigarettes, and coffee. Eventually, she found herself longing for a vegetable, which she expressed during an interview with Tatler magazine.
GWYNETH PALTROW

Gwyneth Paltrow is known for promoting a healthy lifestyle and rigorous exercise routine, yet she occasionally indulged in smoking in the past as well.
In the May 2013 issue of the United States edition of Harper’s Bazaar, a woman aged 52 openly confessed that she permitted herself one cigarette per week.
As a connoisseur of balanced living, I’m often inquired about my indulgences. Despite being the author of a health-focused cookbook, I allow myself a small vice – a single American Spirit cigarette, savored every Saturday evening.
The actress stopped smoking later on, but confessed during a podcast with Holly Willoughby in 2022 that she still pines for cigarettes while looking back at her wilder past years.
BECKY HILL

When British singer Becky Hill posted pictures from her recent travels in America, such as at Coachella and in Los Angeles, one particular photo attracted more comments than the others.
31-year-old singer of “What Love Can Do (Crazy)”, known as [artist’s name], posted a picture of herself and DJ Charlie Boon enjoying themselves during their recent transatlantic journey. However, she faced criticism from some of her fans.
Some found it surprising that the singer was a smoker, as others believed this harmful habit could potentially affect her acclaimed singing abilities.
One admirer expressed, “I truly think you’re amazing, but I hope you’re not promoting smoking,” and another stated, “It’s hard to believe that you smoke” accompanied by a sorrowful emoticon.
A concerned commenter added: ‘It can ruin your singing voice too – be careful Becky.’
Others argued that she should be allowed to smoke whenever she desires, stating: “What’s all the fuss about smoking? She should be free to make her own choices.
For quite some time now, the music performer is often seen savoring cigarettes during nights out, even on special occasions like when she triumphantly claimed her first-ever BRIT Award in 2022.
