Many celebrities, including actors from Hollywood, renowned musicians, and influential wellness figures, might astonish their followers by occasionally indulging in smoking cigarettes or using e-cigarettes (vaping).

The number of smokers in the UK has significantly decreased – as per the Office for National Statistics (ONS) data from 2023, only 11.6% of adults aged 18 and above identified themselves as regular smokers, which is a drop compared to the 20% figure reported in 2011.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but notice that, even though some might prefer to keep it discreet, there’s a significant number of celebrities who secretly indulge in smoking off-stage.

It might not come as a shock that with their demanding professions, appearances on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, and handling personal issues under public scrutiny, many high-profile individuals resort to smoking as a means of relaxation.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but notice that, despite their seemingly extravagant lifestyles compared to ours, celebrities are just like us regular folks when they hit the town for a good time. They too can’t resist the allure of unwinding after dark, and every now and then, you might even catch them sneaking off for a quick smoke break.

In recent times, several celebrities have boasted about quitting smoking, but some have been exposed as hypocrites when photographed surreptitiously lighting up cigarettes.

STACEY SOLOMON 

On Wednesday, Stacey Solomon, noticeably emotional, momentarily stepped outside for a comforting cigarette break after leaving the vet’s office with her beloved pet dog, Teddy, along with her family.

The TV host, aged 35, disclosed earlier this month that she might have to say goodbye to her cherished canine companion, Teddy, a cocker spaniel who’s recently lost sensation in his back legs, within the following few weeks.

Stacey disclosed that Teddy’s ailment stemmed from an inherited health issue they hadn’t known about, emphasizing that the upcoming weeks are pivotal for him. She noted that there’s a possibility he might not make a complete recovery, even if he manages to pull through.

In a surprising change of demeanor, the presenter, usually not spotted with cigarettes, seemed disheartened as she walked back to her car, accompanied by her cherished pet on a leash.

Clearly noticing a clearly displayed “No Smoking” sign on the outside of the practice, Stacey walked over to a nearby curb before lighting up.

Previously, during a discussion in 2012, the presenter openly confessed about her persistent smoking habit while pregnant, expressing her remorse on live television show “This Morning.

Although she said she had cut down from her 10 a day, she has struggled to quit altogether.

I smoke anywhere from one to three cigarettes daily, yet I thought I could give up this habit. There are times when I manage to abstain completely, but there are also days when I succumb to the temptation. I’m trying my best to quit, but on certain occasions, it seems difficult to break the routine.

JENNIFER ANISTON

Behind the clean-cut persona, Jennifer Aniston has a past filled with smoking, an activity she claims to have given up.

However, during her birthday festivities in 2022, the actress and wellness advocate was snapped enjoying a cigarette.

Previously married man, Justin Theroux, briefly shared a clip on Instagram Stories showing the actor taking a puff from a cigarette, but promptly removed it from his account.

Jennifer, aged 56, has confessed that she used to be a heavy smoker, often smoking an entire pack of cigarettes daily during her early professional years.

Individuals who regularly smoke cigarettes often encounter issues such as periodontal disease, chronic halitosis (bad breath), and various oral health complications. Compared to non-smokers, smokers face approximately double the risk of tooth loss.

And she later posted a message about duties as a mother which read: ‘A mother is always a mother.

As a devoted parent myself, I can’t help but echo her sentiments. Even when my kids have become parents themselves, I find myself constantly fretting over them, just as if they were still little ones at home.

BELLA HADID

Bella Hadid is famed for her beauty and being one of the most recognisable faces in modelling.

However, although she exudes elegance, it appears that she might engage in the less fashionable practice of cigarette smoking, based on recent accounts.

I can’t hide my excitement as I recount the times I’ve spotted her indulging in a cigarette – an act that only adds to her enigmatic charm. At the Cannes Film Festival in France, she was captured casually enjoying a smoke, while at the 2017 Met Gala, she was secretly pictured puffing away in the bathroom with Lara Stone, Paris Jackson, and Ruby Rose. These moments only fuel my admiration for her, making me an even more dedicated fan.

In her earlier days, Bella openly acknowledged that she began smoking at 14, with her daily consumption often reaching an entire pack.

Smoking might increase your chances of experiencing infections and inflammation in your vocal cords, and medical professionals advise that this habit could also make your vocal cords rough and dry, potentially altering their vibration pattern, which affects the sound they produce.

KIRSTEN DUNST

Kirsten Dunst was often papped with a cigarette in her hand while out and about over the years.

On several occasions, the performer has misplaced her electronic smoking gadget during performances, causing a halt in her concert in Portland back in 2019 as she searched for it.

At a different show in Brazil during 2023, Lana paused her performance of the popular song “Norman Fing Rockwell” to address the audience: “By the way, if you notice my vaporizer up on stage, could you help me locate it?

RUSSELL CROWE

Russell Crowe was last seen smoking a cigarette in Coffs Harbour, on the NSW north coast in 2023. 

In 2010, the actor from Les Miserables confessed that he attempted to stop smoking when his six-year-old son, Charlie, discovered him smoking at that time.

It appears that the actor from Game of Thrones was sometimes spotted smoking, as photos from 2018 show, but later switched to vaping. Fans even speculated that her e-cigarette seemed permanently attached to her hand due to its frequent appearance.

Her attachment to the vaping device was so strong that it’s said she’d break into tears whenever they were apart. Actress Jennifer Lawrence, her X-Men colleague, shared this, revealing that she shed tears on set when the gadget was confiscated from her.

After the births of her daughters Willa (in 2020) and Delphine (in 2022), she wasn’t seen with anyone else, though.

Yet, as her marriage to Joe Jonas was falling apart, she was noticed having smoke breaks during the filming of ITV drama Joan in September 2023, relaxing on vacation in Capri in May the previous year, and once more in June, while working on the thriller Haven.

Emily Atack was recently spotted smoking a cigarette while socializing with numerous England soccer players, which occurred around October 2023.

At Chiltern Firehouse in London, the actress was spotted taking puffs on a cigarette following her departure from the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards.

Previously, the television host has shared that she started smoking and drinking as a coping mechanism following her parent’s divorce during her youth.

In an interview with the Sunday Times magazine back in 2020, Emily shared that her peaceful upbringing was suddenly disrupted when her parents got divorced.

As a devoted admirer, I found myself estranged from my father for several months, harboring resentment that weighed heavily on me. Similarly, I distanced myself from Mom, opting to spend more time with my buddies, engaging in activities like smoking and drinking.

ANYA TAYLOR-JOY

Anya Taylor-Joy and her husband Malcolm McRae have been seen frequently sharing cigarettes, often being pictured smoking in unison throughout their years together.

2022 saw Mad Max: Fury Road star, Furiosa, casually smoking a cigarette as she strolled through Sydney’s Hyde Park in Australia.

31-year-old singer of “What Love Can Do (Crazy)”, known as [artist’s name], posted a picture of herself and DJ Charlie Boon enjoying themselves during their recent transatlantic journey. However, she faced criticism from some of her fans.

Some found it surprising that the singer was a smoker, as others believed this harmful habit could potentially affect her acclaimed singing abilities.

One admirer expressed, “I truly think you’re amazing, but I hope you’re not promoting smoking,” and another stated, “It’s hard to believe that you smoke” accompanied by a sorrowful emoticon.

A concerned commenter added: ‘It can ruin your singing voice too – be careful Becky.’
