Celebrating love: Who are the canon (and implied) LGBTQIA+ champions in LoL?

Discussions among fans within the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly those of League of Legends, have been ignited by Caitlyn and Vi. However, which champions in the League of Legends universe have been confirmed as part of this community?

Following the release of Arcane, numerous show enthusiasts flocked into the League of Legends (LoL) community, not only as players but also appreciators of its cinematics and the backstories of its characters. As a result, conversations about “Welcome to Noxus,” the latest cinematic, have sparked on social media platforms. Here is a list of champions in LoL who are canonically or impliedly part of the LGBTQIA+ community!

Caitlyn and Vi

At present, this League of Legends duo is particularly well-known, with Arcane’s popularity undeniable alongside the romantic relationship between Caitlyn and Vi in the series. In season 2, fans eagerly called for an extended version of their romantic scene. In the game itself, they have Valentine’s Day skins named Heartthrob Caitlyn and Heartache Vi. It is worth noting that this couple is depicted as a lesbian pairing.

Graves and Twisted Fate

For quite some time now, it’s been known in the League of Legends community that characters Graves (often referred to as just TF) and Twisted Fate are a couple. They have been depicted together in promotional art for Pride Month and in stories where their affection for each other is clear. In one such story, another character noted that Graves has a history of disliking men, while Twisted Fate is described as the “worst man” possible. Some fans speculate that Graves identifies as gay and Twisted Fate as pansexual.

K’Sante

In the world of League of Legends, K’Sante is another character who supports and represents the LGBTQIA+ community. It has been confirmed that he is a gay man, and in the game’s lore, he was once in a relationship with a non-playable character named Tope. However, their relationship ended, and Tope married another man. During Pride Month, K’Sante often appears in the art associated with these celebrations.

Neeko and Nidalee

Neeko, one of the initial champions in the game, is known for representing a queer character. Her representation is highlighted during Pride Month with imagery featuring the lesbian flag. In 2018, her creator publicly acknowledged that Neeko identifies as a lesbian. While some fans have speculated that Neeko had unrequited feelings for Nidalee, this has not been officially confirmed. Recently, there have been hints in Legends of Runeterra about Nidalee grappling with her emotions and their potential relationship, but it remains undefined.

Leona and Diana

As a devoted admirer, I must say that these characters have a heartrending tale woven through their friendship, rivalry, and ultimately, their confirmed romantic relationship. Originating as childhood companions, they later found themselves at odds with one another. Their narrative is beautifully depicted in various lore, short stories, Pride Month artwork, and even a special emote symbolizing their affection – two hands forming a heart. Sadly, these characters were a lesbian couple who, for reasons unknown, had to part ways.

Rell

In League of Legends (LoL), Rell has emerged as another character who champions LGBTQIA+ representation. She graces the Pride Month artwork, yet her romantic narrative is not extensively developed by Riot Games. Her dialogues imply a bisexual identity and she even flirts with certain characters. Unfortunately, there’s limited content about her overall.

Nami

Nami, a prominent figure, identifies as bisexual and is involved in a multi-partner relationship with two other sea entities. Notably, she has been featured in artwork celebrating Pride Month and frequently expresses heartfelt admiration and warmth towards her partners.

Taric

As a die-hard gamer, I’ve always had a soft spot for the charismatic character, Taric. Fans have been shipping him with Ezreal for ages, although their relationship was never officially confirmed. Yet, a hint of flirtatiousness in the Armor of the Fifth Age Taric skin artwork has kept hope alive among us fans. Though he’s featured in Pride Month art, there isn’t any concrete content that confirms Taric’s queer identity – but we can dream!

There are several characters within League of Legends who are rumored to be part of the LGBTQIA+ community, such as Aphelios, Sett, Fiora, Samira, and Irelia. Additionally, Taliyah was initially intended to be a transgender character but did not make it past development stages. In 2022, a Riot Games developer acknowledged that LGBTQIA+ representation is sometimes restricted in certain regions.

We’re eager to learn more details about the upcoming Pride Month celebration, as well as any potential revelations or introductions of additional LGBTQIA+ characters.
