Celebrating a decade: The Top 5 New Day Moments

As a lifelong fan of WWE, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of admiration for The New Day, particularly Kofi Kingston, and their incredible journey that culminated in KofiMania at Wrestlemania 35. Being an avid wrestling enthusiast since the ’80s, I’ve witnessed countless moments of triumph and heartbreak, but Kofi’s story is one that truly resonates with me.

Picture yourself stepping into a time machine and traveling back to your high school days. You take your seat, readying for what’s to come. Minutes pass, and one by one, your classmates walk in, each following their usual routine just as you do. There are the shy ones, the popular crowd, athletes, and misfits filling up the room. The atmosphere gradually becomes lively when a group of mischievous students appear at the door, initiating the day with an endless stream of jokes aimed at everyone, including you. You find yourself torn between joining in on the laughter or feeling uncomfortable by being singled out. However, just as you catch your breath, the teacher intervenes and restores order to the classroom, but you can’t help but feel a pang of anxiety about the possibility of their pranks recurring throughout the day.

Currently, you may not recognize them by name outside of wrestling, but within the world of professional wrestling, they are famously known as The New Day trio – Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, and Big E. Their athletic prowess, combined with their infectious humor, has made them legends in modern wrestling, earning them the title of the most successful stable in recent history.

5) The New Day vs. The Usos-SmackDown Tag Team Championship-SummerSlam Kickoff, August 20, 2017

2016 marked an unprecedented achievement for The New Day, as they set a new record for the longest Tag Team Championship reign in WWE. For a year, they faced off against formidable opponents such as The OC (Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson), The Bar (Sheamus and Cesaro under his real name Claudio Castagnoli), and Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens. Following this period of rivalry, they were assigned to SmackDown Live, where a series of conflicts ensued that would significantly impact their careers.

On SmackDown, The Stable (Xavier Woods and Big E) will encounter a more combative iteration of The Usos, Jimmy and Jey. As their conflict escalated, it turned into essential viewing for the Blue Brand. Initially, fans were thrilled by this rivalry; however, backstage, there was a distinct change in opinion as Woods and Big E prepared to defend their SmackDown Tag Team titles against The Usos on the SummerSlam 2017 Kickoff show. At that time, there was a sense that the Kickoff show was a less prestigious event compared to the main card. Nevertheless, both teams viewed this placement as an opportunity to deliver a performance worthy of headlining a Big Four event.

In their game of tag team wrestling, Jimmy and Jey engaged in a contest with Xavier who was locked-in, while Big E demonstrated sheer power, and both teams displayed tactical partnership. Impressed by utilizing each other as tactics, Woods and Big E showcased an exceptional performance. The twins capitalized on every opportunity, ultimately claiming the tag team championship title. This match invigorated a division that had been underappreciated but deserved more recognition.

4) Big Meaty Men Slapping Meat! – The New Day: Feel The Power, January 20, 2020

On the January 20, 2020 episode of WWE’s The New Day: Feel the Power podcast, I found myself cracking up over some classic humor. That day, Big E’s college buddy Rashad Dunn was a guest on the show, and things got hilarious during a fan question about dream matches. When asked who he’d love to face in a dream match, Big E’s buddy dropped a joke that has since lived on as a wrestling meme legend!

In his animated way, Big E described the type of match he would want to have with WWE Hall of Famer and WCW legend Goldberg. He dismissed the average online descriptions of a great match and gave a simple answer to the type of match he watched wrestling for. “Big Men! Bumping Meat! That’s why I’m here! Big Meaty Men Slapping Meat!” This sent Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods, Rashad, and wrestling fans as a whole into a laughing fit. In the years since this phrase has been featured on t-shirts and used to describe matches where heavyweights clash. Though this started as a joke between friends, it wound up giving the wrestling community a moment full of honest joy.

3. Kofi and Big E Take a Knee for Black Lives-SmackDown, June 12, 2020

2020 summer witnessed a shocking, unjust killing of George Floyd at the hands of a former Minneapolis police officer, leaving the American public appalled. The incident hit African Americans particularly hard due to another tragic loss of life within their community. As numerous celebrities and organizations acknowledged their past mistakes and expressed solidarity, WWE also joined them in denouncing the tragedy while supporting their Black athletes and employees. The New Day, on their podcast, powerfully articulated their emotions – anger, sadness, frustration, and fear as African American men residing in the U.S.

In the heat of our matchup against Shinsuke Nakamura and Claudio Castagnoli, Big E and I knelt in the ring, our fists raised high. This gesture echoed the powerful stance taken by Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the ’68 Olympics and Colin Kaepernick during the ’16 NFL season. This significant moment was even immortalized on a T-shirt, with the earnings donated to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Standing tall as athletes, Big E and I demonstrated that success doesn’t mean leaving our voices or issues behind – we can use them to speak truth and make a difference.

2) The New Day vs. The Usos Rap Battle with Wale, SmackDown Live, July 4, 2017

As a passionate gamer, let me tell you from personal experience, hip-hop and wrestling are an unbeatable combo – just ask The New Day, Jimmy and Jey Uso, and the diamond-selling rapper and wrestling enthusiast Wale. In the heat of their intense feud for the SmackDown Live Tag Team titles, these teams decided to settle their differences in a Rap battle on Independence Day. It was an unforgettable spectacle!

Despite lacking formal training as lyricists, the humor and sharpness in their verses were undeniably present. Big E initiated the battle by mocking Jimmy and Jey’s father Rikishi, but Jimmy and Jey retaliated by referencing an inside joke about Xavier Woods (if you know, you know) and suggesting that Big E’s physique resembled a woman’s. Kofi Kingston attempted to respond, but The Usos ridiculed him for his early Jamaican character. However, it was Xavier Woods who dealt the most damaging blows when he made Jimmy and Jey stumble with his verses. “You and your brother may be tag champions, making the WWE Universe believers. But never forget: you were absolutely nothing until your wife put you on ‘Total Divas!’ I said, it’s time for you to return to doing what you do best, and that’s carrying bags… for who? That’s carrying bags for Roman!

Jimmy and Jey became so enraged that they violated Wale’s rule against physical confrontations, leading them to lose the battle. This memorable instance was significant enough to earn its own dedicated page on the Genius platform for lyrics and pop culture! Despite The New Day being generally associated with humor and playfulness, they were serious about disrespecting their rivals when it came to showdowns. Boom goes the dynamite!

1) KofiMania, Wrestlemania 35, April 7, 2019

Amongst all the gems adorning the crown, it is often one that shines brightest. Kofi Kingston’s path towards the WWE Championship is the resplendent jewel in the crown of The New Day’s history. For years, Kingston played a crucial role as a dedicated athlete who accumulated numerous titles and left wrestling fans with unforgettable moments from the Royal Rumble. However, he had yet to reach the pinnacle.

Through an unexpected turn of events at Elimination Chamber and the collective clamor of wrestling enthusiasts, WWE started pondering over the prospect of Kofi Kingston becoming their top champion. Despite being denied numerous opportunities to become a contender, it was the bond between Xavier and Big E that propelled Kingston towards his rightful destiny. They engaged in a grueling gauntlet match on SmackDown, eventually earning Kingston a title fight against Bryan Danielson (formerly known as Daniel Bryan) at WrestleMania, the Showcase of the Immortals. With Woods and E cheering him on and viewing him as a trailblazer for their careers, Kofi overcame self-doubt and subtle prejudices to transform his dream into a tangible reality.

When Kingston hit his Trouble in Paradise to Danielson and the referee counted to three, the arena erupted in absolute joy. Byron Saxton gave the call of his career as he watched his fellow brothers celebrate and other pioneers such as MVP and the late Shad Gaspard tearfully absorbed the moment from afar. Kofi’s win broke glass ceilings not only for himself, but for other Black and African stars to rise to the top like Woods as King of the Ring and Big E as a Money in the Bank winner and champion as well.

During the Thunderdome era, Bobby Lashley didn’t have a powerful reign as WWE Champion without Kofimania (Big E & Xavier Woods). Similarly, Bianca Belair and Mercedes Moné wouldn’t have headlined Wrestlemania 37, and Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams wouldn’t have been the first Black male main event during Philadelphia’s Wrestlemania weekend if not for Kofimania. The New Day’s legacy reached its peak with this moment, and no matter how Kingston’s reign concluded, it will forever be recognized as a significant turning point in wrestling history.
