CBS News cuts ties with longevity expert Peter Attia amid Epstein revelations

CBS News has ended its relationship with contributor Peter Attia after it was discovered his name appeared frequently—over 1,700 times—in the records of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Initially, CBS defended its association with Attia, but later severed ties.

Dr. Peter Attia, a doctor focused on extending lifespan, was one of nineteen people recently removed from CBS News, as reported last month by editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. CBS News confirmed his exit on Monday.

According to a source close to her, Attia decided to resign after speaking with Weiss. Weiss himself hasn’t been on the air since he was first hired in January.

When Attia’s name appeared in the recently released Department of Justice files related to Epstein, many within the news division believed it would be obvious he should be removed from his position.

However, Weiss, who joined CBS News after Paramount bought her online publication, The Free Press, last autumn, is very doubtful that ‘cancel culture’ is a serious problem and initially opposed quickly responding to criticisms, according to sources who know how she thinks.

According to a spokesperson for Attia, he resigned to avoid potentially interfering with the ongoing work at CBS.

Any appearance on the network would have likely generated a spate of negative stories.

Attia’s email exchanges with Epstein included a crude discussion about female genitalia.

In another message, Attia lamented being unable to talk about what Epstein was up to. He wrote, “The hardest part about being friends with you is that your life is so wild, but I can’t share any of it with anyone…,”

The editor-in-chief held her first division-wide meeting to discuss the road ahead.

In 2008, Jeffrey Epstein admitted guilt to state charges related to soliciting prostitution, which included a minor. He died by suicide in his jail cell in 2019, roughly a month after being arrested on federal charges of sex trafficking.

From a business perspective, it didn’t make sense for CBS to continue working with Attia. His presence likely made it difficult to attract advertisers in the health and wellness space, as sponsors generally wouldn’t want their ads shown near him.

Attia had previously ended his work as a scientific advisor for AGI, a supplement company. He also resigned from his position as chief science officer at David, which makes protein bars.

CBS News pulled an October “60 Minutes” profile of Attia that was scheduled to re-air this month.

Attia expressed his regret for having any contact with Epstein. He stated that he didn’t participate in any illegal acts and never went to Epstein’s private island.

“I apologize and regret putting myself in a position where emails, some of them embarrassing, tasteless, and indefensible, are now public, and that is on me,” Attia wrote. “I accept that reality and the humiliation that comes with it.”

Peter Attia is the author of the popular book “Outlive,” which explores the science of living a longer, healthier life. He also hosts a podcast on the same topic, and through his company, Early Medical, offers a program designed to help people improve their health as they get older.
