CBS Is Making A Big Change For Watson Season 2, But Morris Chestnut Tells Us Why He Thinks It’ll Go ‘Very Well’

Good news for fans of Watson: Season 2 is coming to CBS much earlier than expected! You won’t have to wait until 2026 to see what happens after John’s decision in the Season 1 finale. Thanks to some changes in the TV schedule, the doctor and his team will return in 2025. However, there’s a slight change: Watson won’t be airing after Tracker on Sunday nights anymore. Still, star Morris Chestnut is confident the doctor/detective drama will be a success when it moves to Mondays.

Watson will premiere this fall on Mondays at 10 p.m. Eastern Time, right after the eighth season of FBI. Initially, FBI was planned to air alongside CIA, the latest addition to Dick Wolf’s television universe. However, when CIA’s release was moved to midseason, Watson took its place, and the show is now only a few weeks away from its debut, offering a fresh perspective on Sherlock Holmes. During a conversation with Morris Chestnut about Watson, he discussed his reaction to being paired with FBI instead of Tracker:

I’m really optimistic about how this will perform! The FBI series is fantastic. I’m a big fan of Dick Wolf and all of his work, and I believe it will be very successful when it airs on Mondays. I enjoy the show on Sundays too, but I expect it to do particularly well on Mondays.

FBI is moving to a new night! It’s leaving its usual spot on CBS on Tuesdays and will now air on Mondays, following the cancellation of FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International. On Monday nights, viewers can catch The Neighborhood at 8 p.m. ET, followed by DMV at 8:30 p.m. ET. But with the show returning months earlier than planned, did the Watson team have to rush to finish Season 2? Now that the entire first season is available to stream with a Paramount+ subscription, Morris Chestnut shared:

No. By the time the decision was made, we were already preparing to begin filming. We still had the studio space we’d used the previous year, and everyone was eager to get back to work. Showrunner Craig Sweeny had been writing a lot for the show, so we were all excited to resume production and didn’t want to delay things. I know we did start filming a little before some other shows. I believe Tracker might have started a month after us, but we were on track with our schedule.

Therefore, the idea of bringing back Sherlock Holmes – who wasn’t actually gone for long – and exploring Mary’s private life in the Season 2 opener wasn’t a rushed decision. The Watson team discovered they’d be returning to primetime much sooner than anticipated, but the plan was already in motion. The Season 2 premiere, titled “A Son in the Oven,” will feature Once Upon a Time’s Robert Carlyle as Sherlock, and it promises to be significant for Rochelle Aytes’ character. Here’s what CBS says about the episode:

When Mary’s mother unexpectedly poisons herself while battling a rapidly worsening and unusual form of dementia, Watson and his colleagues are quickly called to investigate. At the same time, Sherlock Holmes reappears, despite previously being believed to have died.

We’ll have to wait and see who is on John’s team at the beginning of Season 2. Both twins were recovering from their near-death experience in the final two episodes, and Ingrid was predicted to depart as a consequence for assisting Moriarty and misleading everyone. However, she was a vital neurologist for the team, and it’s difficult to imagine John with only three members. Particularly since two of those three are portrayed by the same actor.

Don’t miss the season 2 premiere of FBI: Most Wanted paired with FBI on Monday, October 13th at 10 p.m. ET on CBS. The episode will show what Watson has in store, and Tika Sumpter will be back as Laila. Expect to see more of Watson’s developing relationship, which was just beginning at the end of Season 1 earlier this year.
