John Dickerson, a co-anchor for “CBS Evening News,” announced Monday that he’s leaving the network when his contract ends at the end of the year.
Dickerson’s departure marks the first significant loss of a key personality since Bari Weiss became the editor-in-chief of CBS News last month.
The longtime political journalist, who started working at CBS News in 2009, announced his departure on Instagram without explaining why.
I’m so thankful for everything CBS News gave me – the chance to do the work I love, the amazing audience, and being a part of such a historic network. I’m especially grateful for my wonderful colleagues who helped me grow, not just as a journalist, but as a person. I’m really going to miss them all.
In January, Dickerson joined Maurice DuBois as co-anchor of “CBS Evening News,” taking over from Norah O’Donnell. This change was part of a broader effort to focus the program on longer, more detailed reports.
Despite a recent change in format, the program continues to trail behind “ABC World News Tonight with David Muir” and “NBC Nightly News with Tom Llamas,” remaining in third place in viewership.
Rumors of major changes to the news program were circulating before Weiss joined the team in a leadership position.

A former New York Times editor, who also founded the Free Press media company, is entering the challenging world of television news.
According to reports, CBS executive Amy Weiss wants to hire Bret Baier, the anchor of Fox News’s “Special Report.” However, Baier is currently under contract with Fox News until 2028. His show is popular and often watched by President Trump, like many programs on Fox News.
With Anderson Cooper’s CNN contract nearing its end, he’s also been discussed within the network as a possible choice to anchor the evening news.

Bill Owens, a former producer for “60 Minutes”, started making changes to “CBS Evening News”. He left the company following a dispute over a 2024 interview with Kamala Harris, the former Vice President.
Donald Trump sued the network, claiming they unfairly edited an interview to damage his presidential campaign. Despite legal experts considering the lawsuit baseless, Paramount Global agreed to a $16 million settlement. This was primarily to remove any obstacles to their planned merger with Skydance Media.
Dickerson previously worked as a writer for Time magazine and later joined CBS News as a commentator. He eventually became the host of the Washington-based show “Face the Nation.” In 2017, after Charlie Rose was fired from “CBS This Morning” due to allegations of sexual harassment, Dickerson moved to New York to join that program.
I was really surprised to hear that Norah O’Donnell isn’t anchoring the CBS Evening News anymore! I knew Major Garrett was doing a nightly newscast on CBS News Streaming, but I didn’t realize they were choosing him for the main evening news. I tried to find out more, but haven’t been able to get a statement from him yet.
