Cavan Scott's next Star Wars Halloween comic is deep cut from Legends

As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I can hardly contain my excitement for Cavan Scott’s upcoming Star Wars Halloween special in 2025! The teaser about the Nightlands, a deep cut from the Star Wars Legends lore, has me intrigued.

As Halloween draws near, some of us are peering ahead to next year. Among these forward-thinkers is Star Wars author Cavan Scott, who recently offered a sneaky preview of his upcoming Star Wars Halloween special.

The veteran author of the “Vader’s Castle” all-ages comic series, published by Dark Horse Comics (previously IDW Publishing), shared a glimpse in his newsletter. Highlighting his previous works such as “Tales from Vader’s Castle” and spinoffs like “Tales From the Rancor Pit” and “Tales From the Death Star”, Scott’s hint was quite straightforward. He expressed:

I am writing a brand new Star Wars Halloween Special for 2025. But where is it set? Well, so far we’ve been to Vader’s Castle… we’ve been to the Rancor Pit… and we’ve even been to the Death Star… but in 2025 we’re going somewhere new… Where? Well, all I’m going to say is… BEWARE THE NIGHTLANDS! All will be revealed, but I’m 28-pages in and having a ball!

The Nightlands, a notable deep dive into Star Wars Legends lore, isn’t Scott’s first foray into this universe as a fan. These eerie lands are situated on Ryloth, the Twi’leks’ home planet, and they are perpetually shrouded in darkness due to their location at the opposite side of Ryloth from the sun. Known as the Darkside, these regions made their debut in the Star Wars Legends young-adult novel titled “Young Jedi Knights: Jedi Bounty“.

Thanks to Cavan Scott, the Nightlands have been reintroduced into the storyline more recently. His audio drama “The High Republic: Tempest Runner” introduces the Twi’lek character Lourna Dee, who was once a villain but has since become an antihero (and sometimes still acts as a villain) in the era of The High Republic. This character was also mentioned again in Scott’s comic series titled “The High Republic.

This could be a tease of what fans might expect from the 2025 Halloween special. Perhaps it’ll be set in The High Republic era and focusing on Lourna Dee. Though, it could be fun to see the Nightlands set in the Imperial era or shortly after it, where many of the Vader’s Castle stories are set. However, these spooky all-ages comics are known for jumping around to different time periods too, so maybe it’ll follow this model. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Regardless, I’ve been a longtime fan of these Halloween specials, which often pay homage to classic films. The Count Dooku story in a Dracula role is a wonderful love letter to Christopher Lee. I’m glad to see them ongoing. If you haven’t checked them out, the Omnibus was just released this month and available now!
