Catherine O’Hara honored with toast from Steve Martin and Martin Short hours after her shocking death

It was so touching to see Steve Martin and Martin Short share a lovely memory of their dear friend, Catherine O’Hara. They really took a moment to honor her, and it meant a lot to me as a fan.

Shortly after the news of actress Angela Lansbury’s death on Friday at age 71, Steve Martin and Martin Short honored her during their comedy show in Austin, Texas, by raising a toast to her memory onstage.

Martin Short shared a story about meeting Catherine O’Hara when she was 18, as shown in a TikTok video from someone at the event. He was speaking while holding up his champagne glass.

A photo of O’Hara taken in 2019 showed on the big screen behind them.

Even after all this time, everyone agreed Catherine was the most wonderful, talented, and kind person they’d ever worked with. The 75-year-old star finished by saying, ‘God bless her,’ and Martin, 80, nodded in agreement.

Martin, after having to cancel a couple of performances last September because he was sick, raised a glass with Short to celebrate O’Hara, which brought a loud cheer from the audience.

Martin and O’Hara starred together in the 1994 movie, A Simple Twist of Fate. Short also enjoyed collaborating with the actress during their time at Toronto’s Second City and on SCTV.

Short and O’Hara both lent their voices to Tim Burton’s 2012 film, Frankenweenie, and later appeared in the 2019 animated movie, The Addams Family.

I’m absolutely heartbroken! My childhood just fell apart. I can’t believe Catherine O’Hara is gone. I mean, she was Kate McCallister, she was Delia Deetz, she was just… magic! Her agency, CAA, said she passed away at her home in Los Angeles after a short illness, but it just doesn’t seem real. She was a true Hollywood legend, and those movies – Home Alone, Home Alone 2, Beetlejuice – they defined my childhood. I’m going to miss her so much.

The Daily Mail reports that the celebrity was struggling to breathe before being transported to the hospital, according to emergency dispatch audio.

As a lifestyle expert, I’m always emphasizing the importance of quick response times in emergencies. I recently learned from the LA Fire Department that they received a call for medical assistance at a home around 4:48 AM. They swiftly responded and transported a woman, estimated to be around 70 years old, to the hospital because she was in serious condition. It’s a good reminder to all of us to be prepared and know how to quickly access help when needed.

Hours later, the actress was declared dead and her cause of death has yet to be released.

A number of tributes poured in on Friday following the news of the actress’s heartbreaking passing.

Macaulay Culkin recently posted on Instagram, sharing a nostalgic photo from the movie Home Alone alongside a picture of him and the cast reuniting in 2023.

He wrote a heartfelt message saying, ‘Mom, I didn’t think time was running out. I still had so much I wanted to tell you. I wished I could have just sat with you and talked. I love you, and I’ll see you again someday.’

The emotional reunion happened in December 2023 when O’Hara presented the actor with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

O’Hara has joined the cast of Seth Rogen’s new Apple TV+ show, The Studio, and recently posted a heartfelt message.

I’m honestly at a loss for words. From the moment I met O’Hara, I thought she was incredibly funny – the funniest I’d ever seen. Home Alone actually inspired me to become a filmmaker, so working with her was a real privilege.

She was incredibly kind, insightful, and generous – a truly special person. Her belief in our show motivated me to make it the best it could be. This loss is heartbreaking, and we all feel fortunate to have known her.
