On Monday, Nev Schulman found himself moved as he delved into the profound effects of a traumatic bicycle incident that left him with a fractured neck and various other injuries.
As a dedicated parent, I had an unfortunate incident two weeks back. While I was on my electric bike, heading to pick up my little boy, Cy, from school, I unfortunately collided with a truck. I’m 39 years old and the host of Catfish, but today, it’s not about me or the show – it’s about ensuring our safety and being vigilant on the roads.
In a recent conversation with TMZ, the director struggled to hold back emotions as he shared that he is still grappling with the reality of how narrowly he escaped death.
He shared, “I’m getting a bit choked up as I recall it now, since the doctors and nurses who looked after me during my early days post-surgery were quite amazed to see me moving.”
Following a moment’s pause for composure, Nev resumed, “Everyone found it peculiar that a patient could walk following any sort of spinal trauma similar to his.”
He added: ‘So it hit me very quickly how lucky I was.’
The Hollywood heavyweight said the experience has been ‘a real lesson in patience and humility.’
As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but echo Nev’s sentiments about his near-accident experience. He confided that he barely recalls the incident itself, yet he strongly feels that the presence of a dedicated bike lane could have potentially spared him from this close call.
As someone who prefers cycling and running over driving, I strongly believe that our roads should be more accommodating to these modes of transportation. For years, I have encountered numerous challenges while navigating crowded streets due to a lack of designated spaces for cyclists and runners. The current system is not efficient or safe, and it’s time for a change.
Regardless of the circumstances, he confidently expressed his continued resolve to participate in the Honolulu Marathon this coming December.
‘I plan on making a big comeback and really making the most of this,’ he concluded.
On August 11th, Laura Perlongo, Nev’s spouse, shared an update about his health status via her Instagram account. They are the proud parents of Cy, who is their oldest, along with Cleo, aged seven, and Beau, aged five.
Sharing a sweet video of Cleo consoling her father who was lying in bed with a neck brace, the mother of three captioned it, “He’s back,” accompanied by tears and love heart emojis.
On Monday, August 5th, Nev found himself urgently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit due to a muscle-controlling nerve injury, which has potential severe consequences, including paralysis.
In an Instagram post shared on August 10, Schulman reassured his fans that he is expected to have a complete recovery.
He posted several videos of himself wearing a neck brace in the hospital, including one of him rising slowly from his bed with the help of two staffers.
In a detailed post, the MTV figure shared, ‘I suffered a broken neck, specifically at levels C5 and C6. Fortunately, the fractures are stable. I’m not paralyzed, although my hand function was uncertain for a while. The human body is truly amazing, and so are people.’
He also stressed to his nearly two million followers that ‘life can change in an instant.’
In his carousel post, he shared a close-up image of a gruesome gash along the back of his neck.
In a passionate outpouring, I can’t help but share the astonishing progress my idol has made – from the heart-wrenching X-rays revealing the catastrophic impact of that fateful accident on his interior being, to the breathtaking strides he’s taken in his miraculous recovery.
Schulman incorporated touching images and videos of his loved ones offering support and solace in the hospital room, during his recovery.
He added in his caption: ‘The incredible knowledge and care from everyone in the medical community has been so remarkable.
From the pulsating heart of the EMS, through the emergency room at Southampton, and deep within the critical care unit at Stony Brook – I find myself humbled. When the medical professionals share stories about those with parallel wounds who won’t regain their footsteps, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude that overwhelms any trace of self-pity.
Schulman remarked: “I consider myself fortunate to be here, safe and sound, able to embrace my loved ones, with hopes of making a complete recovery.”
Through my recent experiences, I’ve come to truly appreciate the essence of gratitude. The small and significant moments that preceded the accident have taken on a new meaning for me now. And as I move forward in life, I realize more than ever how crucial it is to be thankful for every moment, big or small.
