Casting rumors heat up for Harry Potter series, with Ted Lasso star linked to Hagrid!
As a movie buff with a lifelong love for all things Harry Potter, I must admit, I find myself caught between excitement and skepticism regarding this upcoming TV series. On one hand, the prospect of revisiting Hogwarts and its magical inhabitants is tantalizing, especially after the enchanting performances from the original cast. On the other hand, the controversy surrounding the project and the fear of a less-than-stellar remake looms large.
In the past few months, the group responsible for HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” TV show have faced quite a challenge. The forthcoming series stirs controversy and appears to be primarily driven by profit motives, leading many fans of the initial films to threaten boycotts. Yet, regardless of personal opinions, the project is moving forward, and the team has been intensely occupied with finding new actors for cherished roles.
The process of selecting actors has been extraordinary, with the head writer, Francesca Gardiner, disclosing that the show has received audition videos from approximately 32,000 children, all eager to take on the roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione in their next iteration. Although the casting for these crucial characters is still under wraps, Deadline suggests that some names have been suggested for other significant roles.
In another scenario, Mark Strong (from “Kingsman”) and Academy Award winner Mark Rylance are frequently mentioned as potential choices for the role of Dumbledore, the headmaster at Hogwarts. On the other hand, Paapa Essiedu, who starred in “I May Destroy You”, has been more recently brought up as a possibility to embody Professor Snape, a character previously portrayed by Alan Rickman in the initial films.
Two new names have surfaced in the gossip circles. Sharon Horgan from “Bad Sisters” is rumored to take on the position of Deputy Headmistress Minerva McGonagall at Hogwarts. Interestingly, Brett Goldstein from “Ted Lasso” is being considered for the role of Hagrid, a character originally portrayed by the late Robbie Coltrane.
In the specific role he’s been given, Goldstein has caused a bit of bewilderment. As for Ted Lasso, Goldstein is a football player, quite different from the plump and tall Hogwarts groundskeeper. It will take some movie magic to transform Goldstein into Hagrid, just as Colin Farrell was transformed into The Penguin.
I must mention that at this point, these suggested castings haven’t been confirmed officially. As of now, they remain speculations and gossips.
The Harry Potter movie series is scheduled to resume filming at Leavesden Studios in 2025, the same place where the original films were made. At this point, no specific release date has been announced, but it’s likely that we might see it hit theaters sometime between 2026 and 2027.
