Casting Director Said No to Lily-Rose Depp – Then Her Audition Shocked Everyone!

Kharmel Cochrane, a casting director, has shared that at first, she wasn’t confident about the lead actress, Lily-Rose Depp, for the movie. However, Depp’s audition subsequently demonstrated to Cochrane that her initial doubts were unfounded.

Previously, I had been firmly against the idea of Lily-Rose Depp’s acting capabilities, but during a Q&A session at Scotland’s Sands Film Festival, I admitted to a change of heart. During the casting process for , I had expressed doubts about her acting abilities, stating that I hadn’t seen anything convincing enough to believe she could act. However, it seems I was mistaken in my earlier judgment.

She tried out for the role too, and boy was I wrong! There’s no shame in admitting that.” Cochrane also mentioned that they had reconciled, with him sending an apology text. Depp ended up securing the part of Ellen Hutter in the vampire movie, portraying a tormented woman who receives undying affection from Nosferatu. This character was modeled after Bram Stoker’s Mina Harker from Dracula.

In this modern adaptation, set to release in 2024, Johnny Depp takes on the role of Thomas Hutter, alongside Nicholas Hoult who portrays Ellen’s husband. Bill Skarsgård steps into the chilling character of Count Orlok, also known as Nosferatu. Supporting cast includes Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin, and Ralph Ineson.

This remake of the 1922 horror silent film has proven to be a box-office sensation, raking in over $181 million globally. It also garnered four Academy Award nominations, catching many by surprise with its impressive performance.

In a notable shift in her acting career, Johnny Depp’s partner, Ellen, garnered extensive acclaim for her portrayal of Nosferatu. Her additional acting roles include the leading part of Jocelyn in HBO’s production and a supporting role in Kevin Smith’s independent black comedy film, Tusk, shared with her father, Johnny Depp.

Cochrane Also Responded to Wuthering Heights Casting Backlash

Apart from her work on Nosferatu, Cochrane is recognized for casting Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi together. When some people on Instagram criticized her choices, she replied by saying, “Just wait until you see the final product, then decide if you want to keep me on or not.

She also expressed views on how strict adherence to casting isn’t always necessary, a subject that has sparked discussion online as Hollywood moves towards greater inclusivity. “However, it doesn’t have to be exact. It’s merely a book. Not derived from reality. It’s all art,” Cochrane explained, also mentioning that the adaptation of Wuthering Heights will take more creative liberties: “[T]here’s bound to be some Literature enthusiasts who won’t be pleased. Just wait until you see the set design because that is even more surprising, and there might or might not be a dog collar incorporated in it.

Nosferatu is now streaming on Peacock.
