In episode 5 of Season 3 for “And Just Like That,” Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, returns to New York City, a place that truly suits her. Frankly speaking, we could do without her making trips down south to visit Aidan (John Corbett) in the future.
After the recent invasion of the Carrie body snatchers plotline, a sequence showing Carrie clacking around her Gramercy Park townhouse in different designer shoes sets the scene for Carrie’s return to her best self. However, a surprising obstacle arises when an irritable neighbor living below Carrie moves in. This neighbor is Duncan Reeves (Jonathan Cake), a well-known British biographer who has relocated from London to focus on his new project – a six-month stint writing a biography of Margaret Thatcher in the United States. The challenge lies in Duncan’s preference for working at night and sleeping during the day, which means he goes to bed just as Carrie begins showcasing her shoes of the day.
In their initial meeting, Duncan, visibly angry, unexpectedly knocks on Carrie’s door, scolding her about insufficient noise-reducing carpets. However, their exchange uncovers a mutual compatibility between the two authors. The subsequent scenes depict several understated confrontations as the storyline unfolds – he even purchases cozy slippers for her online! This prompts Carrie to seek advice from Samantha about Duncan’s London fame. Samantly informs her that he has a reputation for being “entertaining.

As the episode concludes, Carrie saves Duncan from a fire caused by a boiling pot, and later dines with him in a restaurant. It’s quite evident that a budding romance is on the horizon. This becomes even more apparent when Carrie surprisingly takes off her heels at home to alleviate Duncan’s concerns about his latest writing assignment.
Absolutely, Carrie is still in the official sense with Aidan. Yet, the unexpected arrival of a dining table that Aidan initially disapproved of and ended up buying secretly for her hints at his newfound commitment. However, as Carrie acknowledged, he’s not ready to be her everyday partner at this moment. If this continues for the next five years, she deserves some enjoyment in the meantime. Engaging with Duncan Reeves seems like a great way to do that, starting with some friendly flirting.
Initially in the episode, Carrie discusses with Charlotte (Kristin Davis) her hope for a grand, romantic ending regarding Aidan. Given the nature of And Just Like That, it seems the show is hinting at a significant gesture from Aidan as Carrie starts to develop feelings for Duncan. This could be seen as either good news or bad, depending on one’s feelings towards Aidan.
