He was her final love before being driven back into the arms of Mr Big.
Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, was seen with famed ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov on Wednesday night. The pair seemed to be playfully recreating the characters of Carrie and her ‘Russian’ lover, Aleksandr Petrovsky.
The two actors, now 60 and 77 years old, warmly greeted each other at the New York City Ballet’s 2025 Fall Fashion Gala, held at Lincoln Center in New York City.
Though known as ‘The Russian’ on the show that aired from 1998 to 2004, Mikhail is actually from Latvia. He’s a talented dancer and choreographer, in addition to being an actor, which led to his invitation to perform at the ballet gala.
Sarah looked stunning in a glamorous outfit reminiscent of Carrie Bradshaw, complete with striking winged eyeliner. She arrived with her husband, Matthew Broderick, age 63, but also took time to warmly greet a co-star, who was accompanied by his daughter, Anna Baryshnikov.

Mikhail’s character, Aleksandr, sparked a lot of debate, with many believing Carrie made a mistake by moving to Paris with him, leaving her life in New York behind. He was a respected artist, but not everyone thought he was right for her.
When she arrived in Paris, her boyfriend ignored her and acted like she wasn’t important. Their argument eventually escalated, and he unintentionally slapped her.
She reunited with her longtime partner, Mr. Big, and they eventually married in the 2008 *Sex and the City* film.
Willie Garson, who famously played Stanford Blatch on the show, once talked about Mikhail’s experiences while filming.
The unique artist, who died in 2021, discussed the difficulty of connecting with Mikhail, explaining, ‘I don’t speak Russian, so it was tough to have a conversation with him. It wasn’t because he was unkind, but simply because he was very rooted in Russian culture…’
You might ask Misha, “What did you get up to last night?” and he’d just reply with “Dinner,” and then just…stop talking. It’s just a completely different approach to life.
You know, people always ask me about wild nights out. I used to jokingly tell a story – I’d say, ‘Oh, my night was way better, I was at Studio 54 and… well, let’s just say things got a little crazy with Grace Jones!’ But honestly? Total fabrication. I never actually did anything like that. It was just a funny way to deflect!
Mikhail was not only a talented actor but also a world-renowned ballet dancer. He started his career with the Mariinsky Ballet in Leningrad, moved to Canada in 1974, and eventually became a member of the New York City Ballet.

He then became artistic director of the American Ballet Theatre.
He received both an Academy Award and Golden Globe nomination for his supporting role in the film *The Turning Point*, but he’s now most recognized for playing Aleksandr Petrovsky.
Sex and the City originally aired from 1998 to 2004, spanning six seasons and 94 episodes. The story continued with two movies in 2008 and 2010, and then a spin-off series, And Just Like That, which ran from 2021 until recently concluding after three seasons.
When ‘And Just Like That…’ premiered in 2021, fans of the original ‘Sex and the City’ were eager to see Carrie’s story continue, especially after the disappointing movies from 2008 and 2010. However, the show’s focus on contemporary social issues ultimately led to its cancellation.
