Carrie-Anne Moss reveals her thoughts on The Acolyte's cancellation

As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of the Star Wars universe, I must say that the cancellation of The Acolyte has left me feeling like a Jedi lost in the Outer Rim without a lightsaber. I’ve followed this series with bated breath since its announcement, eagerly devouring every bit of news and speculation about it.

As supporters grapple with the news of The Acolyte‘s termination, its actors are now voicing their opinions about the sudden finale.

Previously, Lee Jung-jae expressed his hope to Entertainment Weekly that Disney might approve another season of the show, despite his character’s demise in the Season 1 finale. He voiced his sadness over the series being terminated prematurely, as it prevented showrunner Leslye Headland from exploring the main characters further.

I thought that she was a great writer and director who was very talented in the storytelling, as well as creating characters and creating meaningful structures within the story. So I was actually personally really looking forward to watching a Season 2 with her at the helm.

Carrie-Anne Moss, the actress portraying Master Indara, expressed her thoughts after the surprise termination of the show following a single season. In an interview with Chris Killian from ComicBook, Moss described the news as disappointing but admitted that, given her lengthy career in the entertainment industry, she’s learned not to become too attached to anything.

I mean, I’ve been asked that question a lot today, and it’s funny because, you know, when being an actor, you’re in shows all the time that are canceled and it’s in the beginning, it’s kind of a bummer… And then you just learn to not really be invested. You can’t be, it’s a protection mechanism.

Similar to Master Sol of Jung-jae, Master Indara of Moss faced an early demise during the initial season. She reportedly found out about it from a fellow parent at school, however, by then, she was well into her next endeavor.

I heard from, like, a dad at school, and I was already working on something else. So it’s sort of like, oh, okay. It was over already for me. I don’t know, maybe that’s… I’m glad you liked it though. Yeah, I really enjoyed doing that too.

Although numerous rumors suggest that The Acolyte has been cancelled, neither Lucasfilm nor Disney have confirmed or denied this report yet. As a result, it remains uncertain what will happen next with the series. There’s still hope for The Acolyte to be given another chance, but its creators, Leslye Headland and Lucasfilm, need to agree on a shared vision and determine how to proceed with the storyline.

In interviews leading up to its premiere, showrunner Headland expressed her hopes that The Acolyte would last for at least five seasons, but cautioned that a second season depended on the success of the first. There have been whispers suggesting that the show’s high production costs could have contributed to its early cancellation, as Disney executives felt it didn’t attract the viewership they desired.

As a passionate gamer and fan of The Acolyte, if budget constraints can be ironed out and Headland manages to craft an engrossing narrative in a 12-episode format like Andor’s, there’s a chance we might get to revisit this captivating world at some point in the future. For now, all I can do is keep my fingers crossed and keep the pressure on Lucasfilm, hoping for good news down the line.

The Acolyte is streaming on Disney+.
