Captain America’s Endgame: Why Steve Rogers’ Farewell is Even More Impactful Now
Although Captain America, played by Steve Rogers, isn’t featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, the new phase has significantly enhanced the way his ending in Avengers: Endgame is viewed now. The MCU journey of Steve Rogers was a significant contributing factor to the Infinity Saga’s widespread acclaim, and it concluded beautifully with his decision to retire at the end of Avengers: Endgame. After being assigned to return the Infinity Stones to their original timelines, Steve Rogers chose to go back to the 1940s to live out his life with Peggy Carter. He then returned to the spot where he was sent back from, passing on his shield to Sam Wilson.
After that point, the storyline of Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been about his hesitance to take up the Captain America role. The series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” explored this reluctance, resulting in the wrong choice for the new Captain America, John Walker. Eventually, Sam came to understand Steve’s decision, taking on the mantle just in time for “Captain America: Brave New World”. Although Sam’s assumption of the Captain America role has sparked some debate in reality, it was here that Steve Rogers’ choice was proven correct.
Captain America: Brave New World Further Proves Steve Rogers Was Right In Avengers: Endgame
Sam Wilson Definitively Proves He Is The Right Captain America
In the film “Captain America: Brave New World,” Sam Wilson, unlike other aspects of the movie, garnered positive responses from viewers. His proficiency with the shield and his Wakandan-crafted wings resulted in some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most thrilling action scenes, showcasing his remarkable athletic abilities despite not having the super soldier serum. The film emphasized Sam Wilson’s choice to abstain from any form of the serum, a key theme that reached its peak during his battle against Ross’s Red Hulk. It was during this fight where Sam Wilson solidified beyond doubt that Steve Rogers’ decision was well-founded.
The reason Steve Rogers chose Sam Wilson to take on the Captain America mantle stemmed from his deeply ingrained moral principles, a fact that became particularly evident in “Captain America: Civil War.” In many ways, Sam mirrors Steve in qualities essential for bearing the Captain America shield. During his last fight against Red Hulk at the end of “Captain America: Brave New World,” it was clear that sheer strength and tactics were not enough; instead, Sam relied on his greatest asset – empathy – to navigate the battlefield. This approach closely aligns with how Steve Rogers would have handled things, even with the super soldier serum boosting his abilities, suggesting that Sam is the most fitting heir to the Captain America legacy.
Sam Wilson Was Always The Right Choice For The New Captain America
Sam Wilson’s Moral Code Mirrors Steve Rogers
Both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have consistently shown that their actions are guided not just by national identity, but by a higher ideal representing America. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Steve has time and again challenged authority when he believes America’s values are being compromised. Similarly, Sam demonstrated apprehension when tasked with forming a new team of Avengers under President Ross, fearing potential differences in approach. Essentially, they both prioritize doing what is morally right, regardless of its legal status.
Sam Wilson, apart from lacking the ego that made John Walker an unsuitable choice for Captain America, has demonstrated his capability to lead the team. This is evident in his heartfelt bond with Joaquin Torres’ Falcon. Now, this leadership quality will be brought to light in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday”.
What’s Sam Wilson’s Captain America Future?
Sam Wilson Will Return In Avengers: Doomsday
It’s not really a shock that Anthony Mackie is part of the star-studded cast in “Avengers: Doomsday,” considering he was recently seen discussing the establishment of the main team with Falcon at the end of “Captain America: Brave New World.” The post-credits scene of “The Thunderbolts” further supported this likelihood, as the New Avengers debated Sam Wilson’s lawsuit against their use of the Avengers name. This implies that his team was formed concurrently.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but speculate that Sam Wilson might reappear in “Avengers: Secret Wars.” However, given the cataclysmic nature of “Avengers: Doomsday,” it’s risky to assume that any Avenger, including Sam, will make it through unscathed. If, hypothetically, Sam meets his end during Doom’s construction of Battleworld in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” it remains uncertain whether the Captain America mantle will persist, unless a fresh character takes up the shield in the MCU’s future narrative.
