Captain America: Brave New World viewers call it “the most meh MCU film to date”

Title “Captain America: Brave New World” hits theatres this coming Friday, marking a delayed debut due to rescheduling, and it’s garnered some surprisingly mixed initial reviews – a rarity for Marvel productions.

In the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe release, Anthony Mackie makes his debut in a standalone Captain America film, having assumed the role following the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” where he was officially granted the shield.

In the heart of a global predicament surrounding the freshly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross (portrayed by Harrison Ford), Sam finds himself in a precarious position. Time is running out for him to expose the lethal conspiracy and unmask the ultimate orchestrator behind the scenes.

After the initial screening of “Captain America: Brave New World” last night in the U.S., the fortunate ones who attended have been buzzing on social media, expressing their first impressions.

According to Lee Travis from Nerdist and William Bibbiani from The Wrap, “Captain America: Brave New World” falls short as the least engaging Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film yet. They both found it limited in ambition and overly ambitious when it comes to establishing new worlds.

Inverse’s Hoai-Tran Bui commented, “It seems Marvel is following the Netflix memo on characters explaining their actions clearly for an audience that might not be fully attentive. The energy of Disney+ series is quite evident.

Critic Mike Ryan opined that the movie appears to mainly serve the purpose of tying up loose ends from The Incredible Hulk and Eternals, stating further: “The storyline, in turn, becomes as tangled and unexciting as it might sound. It could have been more appropriately titled Captain America: Unfinished Business.

Initially, many fellow fans labeled “Captain America: Brave New World” as a letdown, average, or ultimately inconsequential. However, it wasn’t an entirely negative experience for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, as some positive reactions were also noted.

According to Variety’s Jazz Tangcay, the movie performs as expected while being an enjoyable blockbuster with action. Anthony Mackie excels in his role as Captain America. I thoroughly enjoyed it. On the other hand, Fandango’s Erik Davis describes it as a more down-to-earth MCU film, packed with action and political intrigue.

Prior to its debut, it became known that “Captain America: Brave New World” will be among the shortest films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, running for approximately 1 hour and 58 minutes, or a little under 2 hours if you prefer to round up.

As a die-hard Avengers fan, I can’t help but feel a bit apprehensive about the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, since there’s been some uncertainty regarding whether Chris Evans will reprise his role as Captain America. While I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a cameo alongside Anthony Mackie, only time will tell if Steve Rogers makes an appearance in this epic battle!

Mackie clarified last month that when rumors arose in December 2024 about a possible discussion with Chris, he hadn’t mentioned it as an ongoing topic during their conversation a few weeks prior. In other words, at that time, the matter wasn’t under consideration as far as Mackie knew.

I asked if he was planning to return for the movie since they mentioned bringing everyone back. His response was that he’s enjoying retirement.

Captain America: Brave New World is released in cinemas on February 14.
