Captain America: Brave New World Shocks with $12M Opening Despite Mixed Reviews

On Thursday evening, Captain America: Brave New World made its debut in cinemas and is projected to earn approximately $12 million during its initial night.

The action movie from Disney/Marvel Studios serves as a continuation of the Disney+ series “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and “The Incredible Hulk.

As reported by Deadline, the current performance of the movie surpasses that of Captain America: The Winter Soldier from 2014. Initially, The Winter Soldier earned approximately $10.2 million, later increasing to a $95 million opening.

By the end of 2023, the earnings for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania dropped below its initial projected amount, having made approximately $17.5 million during previews before earning $106.1 million over three days and a total of $120.3 million after four days.

Per the outlet, Brave New World is expected to make $80M in three days and $94M in four days.

In this new superhero tale, we see some familiar aspects reminiscent of 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Notably, Harrison Ford takes over the role previously played by the late William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross. Additionally, Tim Blake Nelson reprises his character, Samuel Sterns.

Critics on Rotten Tomatoes assigned the film a 52% rating, while audiences who watched it after Thursday night have shown a greater appreciation, awarding it an 82% score instead.

Despite some early praise from critics, the film received a lot of negative feedback upon release. Many called it confusing, uninteresting, and typical.

In the narrative, I find myself immersed in Sam Wilson’s journey as he assumes the role of Captain America. Notably, this transition coincides with Thaddeus Ross ascending to the presidency of the United States.

Sam is tasked with determining who is really behind an explosive international incident.

According to Deadline, social media reach for the movie was approximately 600 million, which is typical for a superhero film.

Most of the cast is active online, save for 82-year-old l Harrison Ford.

Prior to the Presidents’ Day weekend premiere, Mackie had a fanbase of approximately 5.4 million on social media. In comparison, Liv Tyler had about 7.2 million followers, and Giancarlo Esposito had around 4 million.

The film opened this weekend in over 4,100 theaters over the extended holiday stretch.

The movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World” is anticipated to be made at a production cost of approximately $180 million, excluding its promotional expenses.

The movie was directed by Julius Onah, who collaborated on the script with Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Peter Glanz.

Experts also anticipate that the movie will earn approximately $110 million in international markets along with its impressive $95 million domestic start.
