Captain America: Brave New World director defends not including Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk

Director Julius Onah has defended the Hulk’s absence from Captain America: Brave New World.

As a die-hard Marvel fan, it’s been thrilling to witness Anthony Mackie stepping into the role of Captain America in the latest film installment. However, what caught my attention was the absence of the Hulk, despite the reappearance of several characters associated with him. Surprisingly, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk was conspicuously absent from the action this time around.

During a conversation with The Playlist, the filmmaker Onah clarified the reason behind Bruce Banner not being present in the same scene as Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson), Thaddeus Ross/Red Hulk (Harrison Ford) and Betty Ross (Liv Tyler).

He pointed out that having a cameo by the Hulk could draw focus away from Sam Wilson during his debut as the main superhero in his initial blockbuster movie.

In the end, my opinion is that this tale belongs to Sam, and I’m content it ended up here—this is Sam’s initial cinematic journey as Captain America. Essentially, we wanted this narrative to focus on Sam utilizing his abilities to conquer obstacles, according to Onah.

As a devoted fan, I must admit that introducing Mark Ruffalo’s Banner into the mix was undeniably thrilling. However, what transpired next was an unexpected yet delightful shift in focus away from Sam. The discussion about it inevitably occurred, but it seemed as though this storyline yearned to be Sam’s solo journey, making it feel like his movie in essence.

During the series, a notable figure who reappeared was Bucky Barnes, portrayed by Sebastian Stan. Following his collaboration with Mackie in “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” Stan’s presence was delightfully unexpected to fans.

Bucky had always been connected to the narrative, and we kept this fact under wraps to maintain a surprise element. However, it was impossible for us to separate these characters permanently following ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, as revealed by Onah.”

Or

“Bucky had been an integral part of the tale from the start, but we chose to keep this a secret so as not to spoil it. After ‘Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, though, it became untenable for us to sever these characters completely,” said Onah.

As a gamer, I was on a quest to discover the perfect approach. We tried various methods, such as introducing Sam at the start or end, among others. Somehow, we stumbled upon an arrangement that resonated deeply because there were only a handful of individuals who could truly empathize with Sam’s emotional journey and grasp the significance of his current situation.

Captain America: Brave New World is out now in cinemas.
