Capcom’s Dead Rising remaster removes Erotica score for racy photos
As a long-time fan of the Dead Rising series, I must admit that Capcom’s decision to remove the Erotica points system in the upcoming remaster is a breath of fresh air. While it was a quirky and somewhat humorous aspect of the original game, times have changed, and it’s great to see developers taking steps towards more inclusive and respectful content.
The reimagined version of Capcom’s zany horror-survival game, “Dead Rising,” due for release soon, is undergoing significant changes. These updates encompass improvements in the game’s dialogue, a significant enhancement to its graphics, and adjustments to certain aspects that may no longer be relevant or appropriate in 2024. One of these alterations involves eliminating the “Erotica” points, which were previously awarded to players for capturing images of female body parts during the zombie apocalypse.
On Thursday, I got a sneak peek at the enhancements for the upcoming remastered edition of Dead Rising Deluxe, straight from its producers Kei Morimoto and game director Ryosuke Murai. The updates they revealed are quite exciting: Frank West and other characters will now have improved facial expressions captured through motion capture technology, and they’ll even be fully voiced! That’s right, even the mall janitor, Otis, will have a voice for the first time. I can hardly wait to dive back into Dead Rising with these new features!
In the gaming world I inhabit, there’s a character named Larry Chiang, who goes by the nickname “Psychopath Butcher.” Recently, I’ve noticed a significant change in his design. He now appears less like a harmful racial stereotype, as you can see from the image slides below. This update feels more inclusive and respectful, which I appreciate.
In the new version of Dead Rising, you’ll notice several enhancements that improve the overall experience. These include a customizable user interface, a gauge to show weapon durability, and a streamer mode that uses unlicensed music to avoid copyright issues (and yes, “Gone Guru” by Lifeseeker will be back in this remaster!).
In Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, unlike before, you won’t receive the Erotica score. This was a bonus players could get by snapping pictures with Frank West’s camera, as reported by Famitsu. The remaster will not include the extra points that were awarded for taking suggestive photos of female survivors and zombies.
In the initial version of Dead Rising, players accumulate Prestige Points (PP) from their in-game photos, categorized under various themes such as Brutality, Drama, Erotica, Horror, and Outtake. Photos classified as Erotica would earn points by capturing images of women showing cleavage, bare midriffs, or underwear. If a photo’s Erotica score reached a certain level, the character Frank would experience nosebleeds, signifying his sexual arousal. The Erotica score was often used for humor; if Frank attempted to take an inappropriate upskirt shot of Natalie, he would be rewarded with Horror Points instead. In the remastered version, Natalie no longer wears a skirt, she now dons pants.
In a similar fashion to last year’s reimagining of Resident Evil 4, Capcom adjusted certain aspects. Originally, in Resident Evil 4, developers incorporated a humorous scene where the character Leon peeks at Ashley under her skirt. This element has been revised in the remake; now, Ashley is dressed in shorts and the game’s camera angles have been strategically positioned to prevent any attempts at ogling from the player.
In the game Dead Rising, the Erotica PP score had minimal influence on overall gameplay. During specific missions, referred to as Scoops in this game, players could achieve objectives by taking suggestive photos with high Erotica scores. For instance, a mission named “Cheryl’s Request” requires Frank to take several revealing pictures of a woman posing for him. If players manage to capture photos showcasing her face and cleavage, they receive an Erotica PP bonus.
We’ve attempted to contact Capcom for their thoughts on how the elimination of Erotica scores affects the missions within the remastered version of Dead Rising, as well as any other aspects of the game. We’ll keep this article current once they provide a response.
The enhanced version of Dead Rising, titled “Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster,” is set to launch on September 19 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Additionally, Capcom has planned a physical release of the game for both PS5 and Xbox Series X on November 8.
