Capcom Sides With Nintendo in Controversial Lawsuit, Palworld ‘Has Crossed a Line’

Yoshiki Okamoto, a former Capcom developer and now chairman of the Japan Game Culture Foundation, recently discussed the legal dispute between Nintendo and Palworld developer Pocketpair in a YouOkTube video. He clearly stated that Palworld “crossed a line that shouldn’t be crossed,” and he expressed concern that allowing such practices would set a bad precedent. Okamoto also pointed out that if Nintendo and Pocketpair reach a settlement, it would imply that games like Palworld are acceptable.

Okamoto stated that if a resolution is reached with Nintendo, the game could become officially playable. However, because it’s currently facing a lawsuit, he considers it unacceptable. He urged people not to purchase the game, explaining that doing so would be a form of support. Okamoto continued, “I personally won’t be playing or buying it.” He also added, “I do understand there are fans who enjoy the game.”

Launched in January 2024, the game received a very mixed reaction from both reviewers and gamers. This third-person, open-world title lets players create weapons, construct buildings, and fight – similar to games like Fortnite. However, it also includes a variety of large, fantastical creatures called Pals, which players can fight, catch, train, trade, and even eat. This, along with designs that strongly resemble those from Pokémon and features like Pal Spheres, quickly drew criticism and led to ongoing legal issues, further increasing the game’s visibility.

Palworld is Just the Beginning for Pocketpair Despite Its Legal Concerns

Last September, Pocketpair unveiled a trailer for Palfarm. The trailer showcases players gathering and collecting Pals to help with their farm, where they can grow crops and build up their home, starting with a simple cabin and expanding to a grand estate. Palfarm will also feature a lot of exploration, including large beaches, dark caves, and towns populated with various characters that players can engage with.

The trailer includes parts that appear to be inspired by games like Buckshot Roulette. Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for Palfarm, which isn’t unexpected given the ongoing issues and legal challenges Pocketpair is facing.
