As someone who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, I must say that last night’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show left me feeling a bit nostalgic yet slightly disappointed. The event, which has been a staple of my childhood memories, seemed to have lost its sparkle this time around.

On Tuesday night, Candice Swanepoel gracefully reappeared at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, marking the return of this renowned event after a gap of six years.

In the fashion world, I’ve been a familiar face since my debut on the catwalk in 2007, and at 35, I’m proud to say I’ve retained my allure. Recently, I strutted my stuff on the runway, showcasing two stunning lingerie ensembles, reminding everyone why they fell in love with me in the first place.

Among the two styles I showcased, the one that truly stole the spotlight was an attention-grabbing ensemble in bold red. It featured a dramatic oversized bow accent on what could be described as a minimally covering top, skillfully framing a delightful curvaceous silhouette.

In a coordinated ensemble, Candice donned a red bra and thong set, complemented it with a monochromatic touch using strappy high-heels, and accessorized with earrings to finish the look.

The stunning blonde wore her hair sleeked back into a ponytail and added a full face of make-up, including a dramatic smokey eye.

Back when I first laid eyes on the enchantress, Candice, she was adorned in a dazzling ensemble of lingerie, a shimmering bra and thong, leaving nary a hint of mystery untouched.

The stunning woman, with her golden hair, wore a barely-there pink lingerie set, leaving minimal mystery about her appearance.

Behind her, the design featured intricate wings adorned with letters forming the elegant script of ‘Victoria’s Secret’.

As a seasoned lifestyle enthusiast, I can confidently say that I found my place among Victoria’s Secret’s illustrious model collective following my crowning as an ‘Angel’ in 2010, hailing all the way from South Africa.

For more than a decade, she has been the primary representative for the brand, often resembling the youthful and blonde image that supermodel Gigi Hadid has adopted more recently.

But she appeared to be working with a fiercer, more defined visage while walking the runway.

Her eyebrows and eyes appeared raised or arched, mirroring the well-known ‘fox-like’ aesthetic often seen in fashion trends.

An upper facelift, brow lift, or facial threading aren’t the only ways to achieve a ‘fox eye’ look; cleverly applied makeup can also give the appearance of a more uplifted face.

Yesterday, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which was previously known for its bold and seductive style, faced accusations of embracing a more progressive and socially aware stance (going “woke”).

Critics strongly criticized the recent revival of the event after a six-year hiatus, labeling it as dull and uninspiring.

I was thrilled to be part of the event that saw me, Valentina Sampaio – the trailblazing transgender model for Victoria’s Secret – take my inaugural stride on their iconic runway for the very first time, a momentous achievement that came three years after making history with the brand in 2019.

Additionally, fellow transgender model Alex Consani strutted down the runway as the lingerie brand broadened its inclusivity initiative.

Some people view the current state of this event as being quite different from its peak period, where extravagant walks and bold fashion choices ruled for weeks following their show appearance – prior to the organization facing issues such as accusations of a harmful work environment culture.

Victoria’s Secret has experienced a decrease in sales, as some critics argue that their efforts towards greater inclusivity over the past few years, such as featuring plus-sized models, have not been successful in attracting customers.

Last night, Cher shared the stage with ex-member of Blackpink, Lisa, and up-and-coming artist Tyla, marking a historical first for the show by featuring an all-female musical lineup.

However, X, previously known as Twitter, has faced pushback due to the perceived decrease in production quality, which some view as less flashy and a reduction in ‘progressive’ initiatives.

The lingerie company gained reputation for its seductive runway shows, where models such as Cara Delevingne and Miranda Kerr strutted their stuff as “Angels.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but express my disappointment over this latest fashion spectacle that failed to live up to the grandeur of the past. Remember those breathtaking moments when models graced the runway with 10-foot white feathered wings, paired with thongs and basques? Well, this time around, it seems the magic has fallen short for many of us.

One commentator expressed that the latest Victoria’s Secret show was incredibly dull, saying, “The Victoria’s Secret show this year is the epitome of boredom.” Another individual shared a similar sentiment, stating, “The Victoria’s Secret show today just looks so outdated and uninteresting. I feel let down by it.

A different viewpoint was expressed by a bystander: “Victoria’s Secret hasn’t responded to our collective requests for change in their shows. The event doesn’t seem to align with what we anticipated. The hairstyles are simple and there appear to be no extremely tall models, plus the overall production feels different.

Another remarked: ‘Victoria Secret really said go woke, go broke.’

Additional feedback was provided: “The latest Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show seems devoid of soul, oh my goodness… Furthermore, it’s puzzling why artificial audience cheer tracks are being played; where is the classic runway?

A different spectator commented: ‘This was adorable, but it fell short… let’s revive the sparkling catwalk and stage lively acts instead!’

Let’s revert to our original style for the VS Fashion Show 2024! The individual sets and close-ups of each look were great, but there was a bit too much backstage confusion. The diversity was welcome, but I think…

In a more straightforward and friendly manner: ‘The original models dominated the stage, leaving us questioning who were the new faces, the old ones, and why we should be charmed by them. The high-end fashion show, #VSFashionShow2024, seemed to lack personality and the usual warm gestures like smiles, kisses, or waves.’
