Despite reports to the contrary, Paramount’s R-rated live-action movie based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is still in development.
Paramount announced in April 2024 that they are making an R-rated movie based on ‘The Last Ronin’ comic book. Tyler Burton Smith is writing the script, and Ilya Naishuller is likely to direct. The film will be set in a different future timeline and will follow the last surviving turtle on a quest for revenge, targeting the grandson of the Shredder, his family’s old enemy.
In November 2025, reports surfaced that Paramount had paused development on The Last Ronin movie to focus on a new, more family-friendly Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. Although fans feared this meant the film was canceled, co-writers Kevin Eastman and Tom Waltz recently told Entertainment Weekly that wasn’t necessarily the case.
TMNT: The Last Ronin may not be as dead as fans think
Eastman stated that a new movie isn’t cancelled, just postponed. He’s confident it will eventually happen, pointing to the success and dedication of the teams at Viacom, Paramount, and Nickelodeon who have worked on previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles projects, like the 2012 series and ‘Mutant Mayhem.’
Eastman expressed confidence that a collaboration would happen, noting that fans are equally passionate about both the Last Ronin storyline and the work of Point Grey Pictures, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg on the Mutant Mayhem series. He emphasized that this positive fan response is encouraging and they remain optimistic.
Just a week after actress Judith Hoag mentioned Paramount contacted her about returning as April O’Neil in The Last Ronin – a role she originally played in the first live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie – Eastman has shared encouraging news about the film’s progress.
She said she’s been asked about doing another project and would be thrilled to do it, calling it a perfect way to end her career. However, she added that it’s not certain whether it will actually happen, saying, ‘We’ll see.’ She shared this at Roanoke’s Big Lick Comic-Con.
The possibility of Rose Byrne reprising her role as April O’Neil in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin movie hints that it was intended to be a continuation of the original, live-action TMNT films from the early 1990s.
While fans are eager for news about Paramount’s upcoming ‘The Last Ronin’ film, they can enjoy the story in comic book form at their local shops now.
