Camila Cabello speaks out on writing songs about ex Shawn Mendes and Sabrina Carpenter after love triangle
As I delve into Camila Cabello’s life journey, I am struck by the depth and resilience that shines through her experiences. Born under the star sign of Pisces, it seems fitting that her latest album mirrors the ebb and flow of emotions that characterize this water sign.
In a straightforward chat with Nylon magazine, Camila Cabello discussed her relationship history, particularly her on-again, off-again romance with Shawn Mendes, and seemed to hint at Sabrina Carpenter, who had a brief fling with him following their split.
The popular singer, aged 27, likewise pondered over her experience within the girl band, Fifth Harmony. She emphasized that effective problem-solving methods were essential in such a situation.
From the year 2019 through 2021, Camila and Shawn were a couple. They briefly got back together in April 2023 following their reunion at Coachella, but they split up again in June 2023. During that same period, from January to April 2023, Shawn dated Sabrina.
In a recent chat with Nylon, she didn’t explicitly mention names, but she did share some intriguing insights. Specifically, she penned the provocatively titled June Gloom as an expression of unrequited feelings towards a love interest who was seeing someone new. Interestingly enough, there’s a suggestive line in the song that seems to allude to Camila asking a rather explicit question about the new girlfriend, which, if you catch my drift, refers to none other than Shawn.
Over the years, Camila has come to reflect on her time with the band from 2012 to 2016 with a sense of empathy.
She explained that she doesn’t know if the anxiety she felt from her time in the group stemmed from being a teenager or if it was in fact ‘more than a person should bear.’
In the magazine photoshoot, the star displayed a short hairstyle and wore nearly transparent bodysuits along with thigh-high boots, exuding confidence.
On her album C, XOXO, Camila didn’t explicitly mention Shawn or Sabrina by name, yet she composed several tracks that hint at Shawn and even alluded to Sabrina in the song “June Gloom.
As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but resonate with the lyrics penned by Camila in her song. It’s their captivating tale of an up-and-down relationship that has me hooked: ‘Will this cycle ever cease? / Guess I’ll navigate and discover.’
She hints at Sabrina using the lyric: ‘She’s calm, I overheard/ Won’t feign shock if I showed her the photos,’ followed by a rather provocative inquiry regarding her.
Camila released her album C, XOXO on June 28, 2024.
Not long after, Sabrina dropped a playful tune titled “Taste,” which featured Camila and Shawn, as part of her album “Short n’ Sweet” on August 23, 2024. Interestingly, the pop sensation also enlisted Jenna Ortega for the music video role.
Sabrina’s melody expresses a situation where she is a replacement, singing about a person who has come back to an old flame while they still have traces of Sabrina’s influence on them.
In a different phrasing, the lyrics could be: ‘Sabrina sings that she’s heard you two are reconciled, and if it’s indeed so, then you’ll need to sample me whenever he’s planting a kiss on you.’
Camila told the magazine she wrote June Gloom ‘after I had hung out [with the song’s subject].’
The following day, I ventured into the studio and requested of Jasper, “Could you please play me some beats?” He responded by pointing out a couple, bypassing “June Gloom”. I quickly interrupted him, saying, “Hold on! Go back to that one!
She disclosed that she asked Jasper to leave the studio while she was composing the song. The reason, as she put it, was because she intended to create something ‘intimate’ and didn’t want anyone present. Additionally, she didn’t want to be expressing feelings of intense attraction with someone nearby, saying, “I didn’t want to be singing about feeling super aroused, but then this guy is right here.
‘I wrote it so fast because to me, everything is so personal. I was like, “I’m writing this for you, b***h!”‘
She made it clear that the term she used earlier, which seemed to be addressing a woman, was not intended to imply herself in a female rivalry context. In simpler terms, let’s say, “I was actually talking about you, so-and-so.
During her time in Fifth Harmony, Camila expressed that she faced challenges greater than the usual for an average teenager.
Looking back at her experience in the girl group, which originated from The X Factor in 2012, Camila expressed that her anxiety was heavier than what an average person could handle under such circumstances.
It seems crucial to emphasize the significance of conflict resolution, particularly in a group setting. Skills like these aren’t typically part of one’s repertoire at age 16. Can you share your thoughts on handling feelings of exclusion?
“What strategies do you use when facing feelings of jealousy? Can you share ways to handle such emotions that don’t cause harm to either oneself or others?
In October, Britney Spears publicly expressed admiration for Camila by referring to her as her “crush” on Instagram. During that same period, Britney served as a judge on The X Factor, where Camila was a contestant.
‘All I want to do is make Britney Spears laugh,’ Camila said.
Camila expressed that it was hurtful when people compared her new song C, XOXO, to Charli XCX’s music, as she believes listeners were not fully appreciating the unique qualities of her own compositions.
The star said she is a big fan of Charli XCX but there is ‘more to the album’ than just hyperpop.
Camila explained that her album, titled C,XOXO, was a reflection of the colors she could both hear as sounds and see in her mind. She described these hues as velvety shades of blue, pink, purple, and lavender, stating that they embodied her very essence.
Camila added that the album feels ‘like what it is to be a Pisces.’
Camila is featured on the latest issue of Nylon, which will be released on Friday, December 6.
Ryan Saradjola took the photos, EJ Briones handled styling, Danielle Priano did the hair, Patrick Ta worked on the makeup, Elaine Winter designed the set, and Pika was responsible for the manicure.
