Cameron Diaz is returning to voice the character of Fiona in the upcoming Shrek 5! She announced the news while on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where she also talked about meeting fans over the years.
During an interview, Jimmy Fallon asked Cameron Diaz if she’d be reprising her role as Fiona. She confirmed that she would, adding, “We’re making a fifth Shrek movie! Can you believe it’s been almost twenty years?” The announcement clearly excited the audience.
The discussion moved on to how Fiona’s character changed throughout the series. When someone in the audience pointed out, “You’re Queen Fiona,” Diaz playfully responded, “Oh, that’s right! I completely forgot. I’m not Princess Fiona anymore.” She then jokingly told Fallon he needed to address her as Queen, and Fallon quickly apologized, pretending he’d been scolded.
Diaz recounted a heartwarming experience with children discovering she’s the voice of Princess Fiona. She said that it’s usually parents who realize it first, excitedly telling their kids, “That’s Princess Fiona! She’s the one who does the voice!”
I was remembering this one time, a little girl just looked at me and started absolutely wailing! It was so unexpected. Her mom was super apologetic, but I told her not to worry about it at all – I really didn’t take it personally. I think kids don’t always get it, so I usually advise parents not to push them to meet me or get too excited. It just seems to avoid those situations!
The upcoming film will also see the return of Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy as Shrek and Donkey.
