Cameron Diaz Calls Herself a ‘Fool’ for Leaving Hollywood After Decade-Long Break

Cameron Diaz has revealed why she decided to return to acting after a decade long hiatus.

52-year-old actress who starred in The Holiday announced her retirement from the Hollywood industry back in 2018, with her latest movie being Annie released in 2014.

Nevertheless, her friend Jamie Foxx managed to persuade her to return for their upcoming action comedy, where they will be co-stars once more.

On this week’s edition of The Graham Norton Show airing on Friday, Cameron expressed her gratitude by saying, “I’m here again, all because of Jamie,” as she confessed that it would have been quite foolish not to return to the entertainment industry.

The star shared: “For about a decade, I’ve been indifferent to everything; declined all offers, but when I received this script, I contemplated whether it might be the right moment.

If I were to be away from my family for 10 hours a day, I desired to spend that time with the most gifted individual in the entertainment industry.

She gratefully acknowledged being part of the film industry by saying, “It’s an honor to create films, and it’s incredibly fortunate that we get to pursue this passion. Just having the opportunity to work in this field after a ten-year gap was astounding.

For the past ten years have been incredibly special to me and my family, yet the thought crossed my mind that letting it slip away, without trying again or giving it another shot, would make me appear foolish. It could potentially lead to new opportunities, and for that very reason, I feel deeply grateful for it being a part of our lives now.

2018 saw Cameron stepping back from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to devote more time to her partner, the renowned musician Benji Madden, who is now 45 years old.

In December 2019, the couple joyfully brought a baby girl into their world, and since then, they’ve been very cautious about sharing details of their life as parents to their now three-year-old child.

Cameron and Jamie will be appearing in the upcoming film titled “Back In Action,” which will premiere on Netflix on January 17th.

The movie chronicles the journey of Emily (Cameron) and Matt (Jamie), ex-CIA operatives, as they transition from a world of spying and danger, into domesticity, raising a family, and leading an ordinary life.

Yet, their journey doesn’t flow as planned, as their identities get exposed and they find themselves battling and fleeing to safeguard their dearest ones.

Discussing her personal involvement in the movie’s action sequences, she remarked: “These stunts are incredibly exciting and thrilling to perform! With all the experience I’ve built up over time, it feels almost instinctual – like I never stopped doing them.

Later on, Jamie playfully said: “I don’t perform stunts – I just don’t enjoy it, but I do appreciate watching others pull them off and making me seem skilled!

This past week, Cameron reappeared on the red carpet for the movie’s debut, signifying her significant return to the spotlight following nearly a decade of staying away from Hollywood and its premieres.

Cameron drew attention in a see-through black blouse combined with a slim black turtleneck, highlighting her inherent charm and elegance.

Instead of accessorizing with high-waisted jeans and classic penny loafers, she paired them with a sophisticated and dramatic flair by adding a long, shimmering black trench coat that had a subtle iridescent glow.

Despite staying out of the spotlight, Cameron drew attention in 2019 by attending the ceremony where Lucy Liu received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame alongside Drew Barrymore and Demi Moore – an event that has been her only red carpet appearance since then.

This fresh action-comedy, helmed by director Seth Gordon at the age of 48, represents a triumphant return to the screen for both Jamie and Cameron. Unfortunately, Jamie had a stroke in 2023, while Cameron took a break from acting due to family commitments back in 2014.

However, her return project faced chaos in 2023 when news broke out that Jamie allegedly experienced a major breakdown on the UK film set, resulting in the termination of three crew members.

In March 2023, I learned from a trusted confidant that Cameron, though holding no ill feelings towards Jamie, is considering stepping away from the film industry after our upcoming project. The reason being, she’s found it challenging to be separated from her family and dislikes the frequent ‘tension and conflicts’ that frequently arise on movie sets.

According to our source, they mentioned that these consecutive 10-hour workdays have been quite demanding for her and she strongly dislikes being separated from Raddix.

They added: ‘Cameron loves being a mom more than anything in the world.’

‘She hates drama and confrontation. This is why she retired from the business in the first place,’

‘She has already proven herself in the industry and has nothing left to prove to anyone.’

The Graham Norton Show, BBC One, Friday 17th January 10.40pm. Also available on BBC iPlayer.
