Calvin Harris Teases New Country Music Track, Dipping into Ex-Girlfriend Taylor Swift’s Genre
He famously dated superstar Taylor Swift – one of the biggest-selling country music stars around.
Currently, Scottish disc jockey Calvin Harris is venturing unanticipatedly into a musical genre that brought fame to his former partner.
Born in Dumfries, Scotland (under the name Adam Wiles), Harris has shared a sneak peek at an upcoming track set for release, which has drawn immediate attention from critics for its distinctly country music vibe.
On social media, the star shared a brief video of himself singing the fresh tune named “Smoke the Pain Away”. He mentioned that we can expect the release of this song this coming Friday.
The tune being promoted by his group as a ‘genre-crossing’ piece represents Harris’ significant comeback to singing following a long hiatus, and it’s quite different from the electronic tracks that made him famous.
A significant portion of the Scottish artist’s initial body of work, which includes his 2007 debut album titled “I Created Disco”, showcases his own singing voice.
Since he decided to cease performing live in 2010, this is the initial release featuring his voice since 2014.
In an article discussing Harris’s shift in musical direction, Music Radar stated: ‘Given how popular country music is right now, it’s no surprise that Calvin Harris, who’s always ready to hop aboard a genre-blending wild horse, has jumped back onto the scene with his latest style change.’

The newly released track has garnered a few high-profile admirers, such as Harris’s wife, Radio 1 DJ Vick Hope, who expressed her approval on the song preview by commenting: “What a voice! YES YES YES!
Similarly, TV presenter Davina McCall wrote: ‘I love it when you do the vocals.’
Harris and Swift dated from February 2015 till May 2016 after they met at the Elle Style Awards.
During the relationship they were spotted shopping in Nashville, where Taylor has a home.
In July 2016, following the termination of their fifteen-month long relationship back in May, Harris openly expressed the tension between them through a sequence of progressively heated tweets.
At first, the DJ praised his ex-partner for her exceptional talent in composing chart-topping songs when she revealed that she penned the lyrics for the song “This Is What You Came For,” which Rihanna sang during their relationship.
Instead, his tweets soon shifted focus as he alleged that Swift was attempting to undermine his reputation and expressed that her actions, which included revealing her part in the song after its global popularity, were hurtful.
In that moment, he shared with his 7.8 million followers on social networks that Swift opted to employ a pen name when crediting the song.
He mentioned that he was the one who composed the music, created the track, organized its structure, and recorded the vocals. Originally, he had agreed to keep this a secret, which is why he uses a pseudonym.

It’s disappointing for me now that she and her team are going to great lengths to portray me negatively at this juncture.
Instead of saying it directly, let me rephrase that in a personal tone as if I were a dedicated fan:
“I playfully suggested to Taylor Swift on another tweet to devote more attention to her flourishing relationship with English actor Tom Hiddleston, 44, who was the star of the latest BBC blockbuster series ‘The Night Manager’.
Hiddleston and Swift were an item for a matter of months in the later part of 2016.
In that moment, Harris penned: ‘It seems more productive to concentrate on your joy in the fresh relationship rather than seeking ways to criticize or belittle your former boyfriend for amusement.’
