Calling Top Gun fans! Tom Cruise issues promising update on third movie
Tom Cruise recently shared some exciting news about a potential third installment in the Top Gun series. According to him, discussions are underway with producers regarding multiple story ideas for the film.
The 1986 movie named “Top Gun” and its 2022 sequel, titled “Top Gun: Maverick“, chronicle the thrilling aerial escapades of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise), who engages in and instructs at the US Navy’s Top Gun aviation program.
After the blockbuster sales of Top Gun: Maverick, Paramount Pictures has been brainstorming concepts for a third movie in the franchise. Officially, a sequel has been in active development since January 2024.

In recent months, progress has been slow, but during a talk show appearance on Today in Australia, Cruise revealed that he is currently brainstorming concepts for the upcoming sequel in the series.
He mentioned that they are brainstorming numerous ideas for potential stories, considering what can be achieved with them. It’s been 35 years since he came up with the concept for “Top Gun: Maverick,” and now they are discussing sequels to both “Days of Thunder” and “Top Gun: Maverick.
The actor mentioned that there are several other movies they’re actively involved in at the moment. He continued by saying that he’s either filming a movie, preparing a movie, or promoting one – and it doesn’t seem like he’s stopping anytime soon, he added this while on the promotional tour for “Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
It’s clear that Cruise stays true to his commitments, as he previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he will keep making action films and intends to create movies well into his hundreds.
Although specifics about a third Top Gun movie are still limited, it’s been announced that Tom Cruise will be joined by Miles Teller and Glen Powell in the cast again. Their roles as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw and Jake “Hangman” Seresin respectively, will be repeated in this upcoming sequel.
In a statement made in January 2024, Powell hinted at upcoming developments regarding the next installment, saying, “We’ve got some thrilling news coming up soon… I frequently chat with Joseph Kosinski, Cruise, and Jerry Bruckheimer. There are definitely things brewing, and they sound incredibly exciting.
In more casual terms, we can say: After appearing in “Anyone But You” and “Twisters”, Powell hinted that the production might soon begin. He even shared last July that he had received a starting date for filming.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is in UK cinemas on 21 May.
