Call the Midwife’s Helen George addresses character Matthew’s absence in beloved BBC show

Helen George, known for her role in Call the Midwife, has spoken about why her on-screen husband, Matthew, wasn’t in the recent Christmas episode.

The latest season of the BBC series confirmed that Trixie and Matthew Aylward (played by Olly Rix) are still a couple, but it seems unlikely the actors will share any scenes together in future episodes.

Rix left the show after season 13 when her character, Trixie, and Matthew moved to New York. She returned to London and Nonnatus House for season 14, but Matthew hasn’t been seen since.

Trixie shared with her colleagues at Nonnatus House that Matthew wouldn’t be able to leave New York until fall. She explained that she needed to bring their son, Jonty, home and get him ready to start school after Easter.

After the first episode of the season aired on BBC One on January 11th, George shared his thoughts on whether the couple would stay together.

The celebrity explained that while every marriage is different and might seem unusual to others, what matters is that it works for the couple inside the relationship (according to the Mirror).

With Trixie and Matthew living on separate continents, George’s character is able to happily return to her work at Nonnatus.

She believes allowing Sister Julienne to return to Nonnatus House gives her the freedom to balance her life as Lady Aylward with her true passion: delivering babies. It lets her have the best of both worlds, returning to what she loves most while also fulfilling her other responsibilities.

She can effortlessly switch between glamorous occasions with Matthew and the messy realities of caring for a baby, like cleaning up messes.

With the season progressing and Trixie and her colleagues becoming involved in the Women’s Liberation movement, it’s uncertain how Call the Midwife will address the romantic relationship that’s been developing behind the scenes.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
