Call the Midwife’s Cyril and Rosalind baby news comes at a bittersweet cost for one fan favourite

For fans of Call the Midwife, it’s hard not to love the sweet romance between Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) and Rosalind (Natalie Quarry). Even though things moved quickly for them, as Cyril admits, their recent announcement that they’re expecting a baby perfectly shows how strong and wonderful their connection is.

Rosalind found herself increasingly worried about the future, especially before she could tell Cyril she was pregnant. Thankfully, his calm and constant affection reassured her.

Cyril didn’t suggest a hasty marriage to solve their issues. Instead, he immediately reassured Rosalind that he’d always envisioned a future with her. He admitted he’d expected to wait, but as the conversation progressed, they both felt a sense of relief that they wouldn’t have to. What could have been a difficult discussion actually brought them closer and eased their worries.

Set to the show’s familiar and touching theme music, their emotional conversation almost brought viewers to tears. However, while their relationship seems perfect, this new development feels bittersweet considering the painful end of his previous marriage to Lucille.

It’s a poignant twist that Call the Midwife has strengthened Rosalind and Cyril’s bond through an unexpected pregnancy, considering fertility problems were the reason his marriage to Lucille ended.

Lucille was deeply affected by her miscarriage, and it significantly contributed to her subsequent mental health struggles. Many people recall how much she suffered.

Although the actor chose to leave the show, fans were deeply saddened by the departure of his character. This was especially true for viewers like Cyril, whose grief played out in a long and moving storyline on Call the Midwife. The audience watched him struggle with the loss of his baby and then his wife, and saw how their emotional distance grew into something irreparable.

Viewers also lost a vital element: the show’s only portrayal of a strong, positive Black relationship built on love, loyalty, and lasting commitment.

While it’s good to hear that both Lucille and Rosalind are doing well and building new lives, the timing of Rosalind’s pregnancy announcement, so close to the finalization of his divorce, feels a bit sensitive and difficult to process.

However, this doesn’t diminish the strength of their connection. What truly makes their story beautiful, beyond the passionate romance, is the depth creator Heidi Thomas and her team have added by exploring Cyril’s role as a clergyman.

Ever since he started dating Rosalind, Cyril has faced criticism from Mrs. Wallace (Linda Hargreaves), a prominent member of his community. She has repeatedly told him that his behavior isn’t fitting for someone of his faith.

Mrs. Wallace thought his actions were questionable, but they allowed the audience to see Cyril as a complex individual, not just a pastor. We saw him with personal desires and weaknesses, someone capable of making mistakes. This portrayal of him being driven by his feelings makes him more relatable and human, and it’s been a compelling way to develop his character and explore the human side of a religious figure.

This also allows the show to delve more thoroughly into the complexities of interracial relationships in the 1970s, going beyond just single episodes.

Cyril’s breakup with Lucille is just as disappointing as the fading romance between Trixie and Matthew, and it affects more people. However, the connection between Cyril and Rosalind adds a touch of hope and softens the sadness of missed opportunities.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
