Call the Midwife tees up new romance for Cyril away from Lucille

As a seasoned gamer of Call the Midwife, I have to admit that the latest Christmas special has me on edge. The subtle yet palpable tension between Cyril and Nurse Rosalind has been brewing for quite some time now, and it seems like this year’s special might finally be the tipping point.

For some time, there seems to be a smoldering connection developing between Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) and nurse Rosalind (Natalie Quarry). Though understated and gradual, their growing affection is unmistakable to us.

Over the latest television season, “Call the Midwife” has gradually brought the two characters closer, particularly during their beach vacation. They stood by one another in challenging situations and shared moments over delightful lemon-filled sandwiches.

They frequently spent time together without showing any signs of discomfort, but it’s worth noting that the blossoming affection between them had never been a likely development due to Pastor Robinson being married to Nurse Lucille from Nonnatus. However, this situation has taken an unexpected turn recently.

As Lucille’s mental health deteriorated due to their miscarriage and heightened racial strife in Poplar, she longed deeply for their homeland, Jamaica. Recognizing her need for rest, Cyril suggested they both go back home temporarily. However, he didn’t foresee that her visit would stretch on indefinitely without a definite return date.

Spectators saw their dream of their reunion dissipate throughout the season, yet despite this, Cyril is not a person who would betray Lucille without first being certain that it was indeed the end for them.

In the recent Christmas episode of “Call the Midwife,” Cyril got a letter that could potentially mark the beginning of the dissolution of his and Lucille’s union.

In the initial section of the two-part correspondence, contrary to Cyril’s expectations, Lucille’s letter does not contain any information about her arrival. Rather, it simply states “nothing.

Cyril commented, “She’s kind, considerate, and truly happy at work; she rarely complains.” Afterward, he left his workplace with a broken spirit.

If a warm urge to embrace the screen, expressing sympathy towards the compassionate pastor, were to overtake you, it wouldn’t be surprising at all.

In just a few words, Lucille conveyed much, and “Call the Midwife” added further depth. Despite not explicitly inviting him, asking for his company, or discussing their relationship, Lucille’s actions seem to suggest she is pulling away from her husband.

It’s uncertain if she hasn’t yet disclosed to him the truth we all understand – her desire to permanently settle in Jamaica – or if her time with Cyril has ended, but either way, it significantly stresses their already weak bond.

During the Christmas chaos, the creators of Call the Midwife subtly strengthened the relationship between Rosalind and Cyril by weaving their bond into the storyline.

As they tenderly tended to the fugitive John Kazek (Jock), their bond deepened. After dealing with his mother’s funeral and ensuring Jock was back behind bars, Rosalind proposed a hopeful plan: she and Cyril would visit her mother’s grave together, symbolically laying flowers in place of the son who couldn’t attend.

Although it may not seem romantic, there was a faint spark of optimism in her tone, and over the years, their bond has deepened as they’ve worked together to serve others.

Regardless of the time, it’s clear that Rosalind’s feelings towards Cyril are becoming increasingly apparent and stronger. Although Cyril may not be prepared to consider another romance just yet – as his heart is still drawn to his separated spouse – the warm smile he gives back to Rosalind cannot go unnoticed. There’s a mutual attraction between them, too.

The arrival of Lucille’s letter hints at the possibility of the storyline involving Lucille and Cyril being revived once again on ‘Call the Midwife’. Whether this will result in reconciliation or separation remains uncertain, but it seems likely that a new character will be introduced to complicate the situation further.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
