Call the Midwife star confirmed for Jane Austen role in new “beautiful” BBC period drama

A lesser-known figure from the novel “Pride and Prejudice” is set to shine brightly in an upcoming BBC production, with Ella Bruccoleri, famously known for her role in “Call the Midwife“, taking on a key part.

Jane Austen’s cherished novel centers on the spirited main character Elizabeth Bennet, offering insights into the kindness and attractiveness of her elder sister Jane, as well as hinting at the impulsive nature of the younger sisters Kitty and Lydia.

In the story I’m reading, it’s not often that I come across my middle sibling, Mary. When she does make an appearance, she’s portrayed as a quiet, bookworm type, more comfortable at home than in the bustle of high society. She’s got a bit of a social fumble to her, and it seems like she’d rather skip the fancy events.

What to Read Next

Drawing inspiration from Janice Hadlow’s novel entitled “The Other Bennet Sister“, this work expands upon Mary’s journey, emphasizing themes of personal growth and self-reliance as she breaks free from the shadows cast by her siblings.

In the future, BBC One will air this series, with a majority of the scripts being penned by Sarah Quintrell, who has previously written “The Power”. Meanwhile, Maddie Dai, known for her work on “We Were Dangerous”, will write one out of the ten episodes in the series.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but get excited about the news that Jennifer Bruccoleri, famously recognized for her portrayal of Sister Frances in Call the Midwife, has been cast as Mary in an upcoming production. Overjoyed by this revelation, the actress herself expressed her enthusiasm, stating that she’s felt a stronger connection to the middle Bennet sister rather than the lead character Elizabeth (Lizzy).

Speaking from personal preference and further solidified after reading Janice Hadlow’s fantastic book, I consider myself extraordinarily fortunate to delve deeply into Mary’s world for the upcoming months, a creation brought to life by these remarkable authors. This was expressed in a statement.

Sarah Quintrell’s scripts brim with exquisite, unique touches, compassion, wit, and an abundance of warmth… suggesting that beyond Mary’s stiffness and propriety, there exists a woman yearning for significance and companionship.

Regarding Quintrell, it was mentioned that he is overjoyed to have Ella Bruccoleri playing Mary Bennet. She perfectly embodies a blend of warmth, empathy, and wit in the role. I am eagerly anticipating audiences witnessing her steal the spotlight and shine brilliantly!

Author Janice Hadlow expressed her approval of Bruccoleri’s casting, stating: “I’m completely thrilled that Ella is taking on the role of Mary Bennet. I have no doubt she’ll embody the Mary I’ve envisioned – awkward, stiff, prone to blunders, yet sensitive, lonely, and yearning for love.

As a fellow gaming enthusiast, I can confidently say that her emotional depth is on par with my own, making me believe she’d be an outstanding choice for the role of another Bennet sister.

Just as the novel does, the series plans to transport Mary from Meryton to the social events of Regency London, with a stopover in the Lake District along the way.

Executive producer Jane Tranter believes that Ella Bruccoleri is an ideal candidate for the role of leading ‘The Other Bennet Sister.’

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my excitement: Mary’s narrative unfolds from the shadows into brilliance, and I am confident that Ella will skillfully depict each nuance of her transformation with charm, elegance, and profound emotional insight. It’s a privilege to have her central to this tale.

Among Bruccoleri’s acting roles are appearances in the series ‘Bridgerton’, Mark Gatiss’s production ‘Bookish’, the show ‘Extraordinary’, the murder mystery ‘Ludwig’, and the third installment of ‘Paddington’, titled ‘Paddington in Peru’.

As an ardent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that “The Other Bennet Sister” is set to grace our screens! You can catch it on BBC iPlayer and BBC One here in the UK. For my friends across the pond in the US and Canada, you can find it on BritBox – let’s not miss out on this captivating tale!
