Call the Midwife season 14 is going to look very different for Trixie
As a seasoned gamer of Call the Midwife, I must confess that the Christmas special left me with more questions than answers about Trixie and Matthew’s fate. While it was heartening to see Trixie back in action as a midwife, even if just for a short while, the uncertainty surrounding her husband’s return has me feeling like I’m stuck in a never-ending game of limbo.
Call the Midwife season 14 Christmas special spoilers follow.
As FredaClaus, also known as Fred Buckle when out of my Santa suit, I’ve ventured into Poplar – a sure sign that it’s time for gifts! Delight awaits all the well-behaved kiddos here.
However, for ardent “Call the Midwife” enthusiasts, there’s just one present they hope to find in their stocking this year (now that Reggie has been located), and that is some explanation regarding Trixie (Helen George) and Matthew’s (Olly Rix) future.
In essence, during Season 13, the Aylwards, who were like the royal family of Poplar, faced an agonizing will-they-won’t-they situation that tested their relationship. This tension reached its peak when Matthew decided to move to New York to launch a new venture, leaving the family financially stranded in London.
Without a doubt, he asked Trixie to accompany him, and following much emotional deliberation, she consented. As a result, she departed from Nonnatus, bound for the United States, to reunite with her loved ones.
This particular Christmas special featured the unexpected arrival of Lady Aylward, who came alone and dived headfirst into the holiday celebrations. She had planned to leave for New York by Christmas, but a combination of heavy fog and labor strikes prevented her flight from taking off.
It wasn’t unexpected that Trixie would reappear – George was anticipated to come back, not just for the special event, but also for Season 14.
It was Rix’s Matthew, however, who gave cause for concern.
Although there hasn’t been an official confirmation from the BBC yet, it seems highly likely that Olly Rix has parted ways with the show, given the strong evidence and rumors pointing towards his departure.
It appears the broadcaster wants to keep secrets, but based on hints dropped during the holiday special, such as Matthew’s thriving business expanding, it seems unlikely Rix will return anytime soon, not in a regular capacity at least. However, this leaves us wondering about Trixie’s role in season 14 since she has been confirmed for it.
It seemed like more sorrow might await the nurse who has had her share of romantic hardships in “Call the Midwife,” but luckily, it seems as though the show has devised a method to sustain their relationship without inflicting further emotional turmoil upon Trixie, if our observations are correct.
Although she had to temporarily halt her nursing work because of the move, Trixie found herself drawn back to the profession when Shelagh (Laura Main) urgently called Nonnatus House seeking a midwife.
As the baby’s delivery went smoothly, the longing Trixie had been experiencing due to being away from work gradually eased. During an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, she confessed that there were indeed aspects of her job she didn’t pine for – testing urine and cycling on cobblestones in heavy rain, for instance. However, she did miss the sense of purpose she felt while assisting a laboring mother during childbirth and the feeling of camaraderie it brought.
She shared, “I’ve mastered avoiding things harmful to me, but I find it challenging to resist those things that complete me instead.
Over the unexpected holiday season, I found myself stuck at Poplar. To my surprise, it led to an intriguing conversation about my life beyond this place with none other than Sister Julienne, played by Jenny Agutter.
As much as I’d love to return home to England soon, it’ll be a while yet. But here’s some good news: things are thriving with our business, which unfortunately means I can’t jet off just yet.
It seems likely that she’s referring to her job, as Sister Julienne subsequently inquired if she plans to continue midwifery upon her return.
Trixie emphasized, “I’ve always planned to keep going,” expressing her disbelief at the thought of ever halting. She elaborated on the intricate process required to become a licensed midwife in the U.S., which entails various exams across multiple states. Concerned that her skills might grow stale, she continued the conversation.
Sister Julienne quickly replied, ‘Please do return to us,’ she said, leaving room for Trixie to possibly come back, even if just temporarily, so as to allow for a believable scenario where Trixie might rejoin without jeopardizing Matthew’s marriage.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel excited about the upcoming season 14! From what I gather, it looks like our beloved Trixie will be juggling two worlds – her life in bustling New York and her cherished roots in Poplar. She’ll be building a new home with Matthew and their stepson Jonty (Archie O’Callaghan) across the pond, all while continuing her education, keeping her skills sharp in Poplar, and tackling whatever challenges come her way. With Trixie, it seems a year is just another opportunity to prove that she’s not one to shy away from hard work!
As a gamer, I can’t help but hope that Matt might pop up again every now and then, or maybe even permanently if Rix manages to squeeze it into his busy schedule, given the rumors about him joining “Casualty”.
It’s great news that with the arrival of the New Year, a fresh season of “Call the Midwife” is just around the corner. So, we don’t have much longer to ponder about the questions we’re eagerly waiting for answers on!
Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
