Call the Midwife may have just found a way to reunite Trixie and Matthew, but you won’t be happy

Honestly, I’m stressing way more about Trixie and Matthew‘s relationship than I thought I would – it’s like worrying about whether Nonnatus House itself is going to be okay! And it turns out those two things might actually be connected. A few episodes back, we found out the council is planning to shut down Nonnatus House and Dr. Turner’s maternity home, which is a total shocker.

Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) has reluctantly accepted the decision regarding Nonnatus House, choosing not to fight it even though it means the NHS will take over. This impacts everyone who works there, including the nurses like Trixie, who will now need to find new jobs.

Since Call the Midwife began in 2012, Helen George’s character, Trixie, has become a firm favourite with viewers. Now that Nonnatus House is closing, Trixie plans to use her expertise at a new clinic: The Lady Emily Clinic for Women and Babies.

What to Read Next

This week on the show, Trixie had a revealing conversation with the clinic director, Mr. Herbert Scarisbrick (played by Richard Dillane). She agreed to become the new Matron, but with a few conditions.

She told Mr. Scarisbrick she wouldn’t be able to start until after the new year, as she needed to resign from her position at Nonnatus House, which was facing difficulties. The midwife admitted the decision was difficult, as she disliked the idea of working in a hospital and cherished her time at Nonnatus House, calling it a wonderful experience. She was also saddened by the decline of home births, viewing it as a significant loss.

The Lady Emily Clinic provides a middle ground between giving birth at home and in a hospital. It’s a private facility that offers a home-like environment for mothers, allowing Trixie to build close relationships with patients while supporting them through pregnancy and childbirth.

Taking this new job will mean leaving Nonnatus House, possibly before it officially closes, and requiring the sisters to adjust and manage things on their own as they move forward.

It’s uncertain whether the order and the midwives will continue working in Poplar, as the latest episode strongly suggested.

In the second-to-last episode, Sister Julienne revealed she was heading to the Mother House to talk about the future of their mission work. When Sister Catherine asked if they would still be serving the people of Poplar, Sister Julienne responded, “There are people everywhere who need help, let’s find out what’s being planned.”

We understand the Call the Midwife story will move the characters to a new international setting. It’s currently unclear if they’ll ultimately stay there, move on to another place, or return to Poplar.

As a big fan, I’ve read that the real-life setting for the series has moved to Birmingham, but it’s not a sure thing the show will do the same. Still, one thing seems pretty solid: Trixie is definitely staying put at The Lady Emily Clinic, which is great to hear!

If the changes at Nonnatus House lead to Trixie leaving, it could also mean Helen George won’t be a regular on the show anymore, though she might make occasional appearances. While it would be sad to see her go, her departure could create an opportunity for the character of Matthew to come back to Poplar.

It doesn’t look like Olly Rix, who now stars in Casualty, will be returning to Call the Midwife anytime soon. While it’s highly unlikely the show would eliminate Trixie’s character just to resolve the issues with her marriage, the storyline could evolve in a way that allows them to address the situation with Matthew and further develop her character.

Now that the legal issues were resolved and Trixie was settled, the Aylward family was finally able to come together again. Matthew returned from New York as Trixie began working at the clinic, allowing them to reunite privately.

If you’re unhappy with the idea of a reunion potentially meaning George might leave the show, remember this is just speculation. Also, Trixie had doubts about the job offer from the start, particularly because she felt limited to helping only wealthy clients. It’s possible she won’t take the position after all.

George has consistently denied any plans to leave the show. If Nonnatus House can overcome its current challenges, there’s still hope for both Trixie and the nuns to continue their work in Poplar.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
