Heidi Thomas, the creator of Call the Midwife, has teased exciting news about the show’s first-ever movie. The film will continue the story right after the TV series and will be set in 1972, taking the characters abroad. Thomas has revealed one of three potential locations for their new adventures, and the final destination will be announced in the season 15 finale.
The film’s creator recently told Radio Times that Australia is a leading contender for where the movie will be filmed, but they’re also considering two other locations. They clarified it’s not that Australia is unlikely, but they’re evaluating three possibilities in total.
Thomas revealed that Australia is one potential location for the future of the ‘Call the Midwife’ team, hinting at two more possibilities he’s keeping secret for now. He promised the season 15 finale will reveal where everyone ends up, explaining that Sister Julienne will name all the possible locations, so viewers won’t have to wait long to find out.

A prequel to Call the Midwife is coming soon. Set during World War II, the new series will explore the early lives of familiar characters like Sisters Julienne (Jenny Agutter), Evangelina (Pam Ferris), and Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt). According to an interview with Radio Times, creator Heidi Thomas noted that while Monica Joan isn’t very young at the start of the series, she’s still at her peak.
The show will feature three new midwives who are unfamiliar with the East End and quickly find themselves facing challenging situations, she explained.
Thomas pointed out something fascinating: in times of war, while men initially take the lead, women quickly become responsible for everything, as men are either sent to fight overseas or assigned to support roles at home.
I’m really excited because this game is going to feature a ton of powerful female characters. It’s all about letting them take the lead and really shine – strong women are definitely the focus here.
