Call the Midwife hints Trixie’s future is on shaky ground in blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment

The final episode of season 14 of “Call the Midwife” seems to suggest a choice regarding Helen George’s character, Trixie, in the BBC historical series may have been made.

In the last episode, Trixie (George) showed regret when she couldn’t attend Nancy’s (Megan Cusack) wedding because of her duties as a bridesmaid at Matthew’s (Olly Rix) business partner’s wedding in New York.

Joyce (Renee Bailey) replied, stating: “Such experiences come from leading a life that straddles two oceans. It’s impossible to be present in all places simultaneously.

Next, the camera transitioned from Joyce to Trixie, lingering for a moment on her thoughtful, introspective face.

In the given episode, the topic wasn’t delved deeper, but its introduction hints at the possibility that Trixie’s current lifestyle, balancing Poplar and New York, might not be sustainable anymore. She could be facing a decision where she needs to pick one city soon.

During the course of the season, Trixie frequently commented on the success of Matthew’s U.S. business, and surprisingly, even though they planned to stay for just a year, she has been gaining certifications to become an American-certified midwife.

It appears that Rix hasn’t yet officially announced his departure from the show, but he has accepted a new position on Casualty. In this role, he will be playing Holby City’s lead clinical consultant, Flynn Byron, who is scheduled to join the hospital’s Emergency Department.

His new career move throws into question the possibility of him returning to Call the Midwife.

In the middle of season 14 this year, George expressed uncertainty about Rix’s character’s fate, stating: “I’m curious to discover what transpires with that. At the moment, I’m in the dark, and I can’t wait to find out!” (According to Radio Times).

In September 2024, George dismissed speculations about her departure prior to season 14 by confirming that she had “always intended to return,” according to Hello magazine. However, as of now, she has remained silent regarding her plans for season 15, which is scheduled to air in 2026.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
