Fans of “Call the Midwife” have expressed enthusiasm about Molly Vevers’ involvement in the series, referring to it as an “exciting” development.
In this coming Sunday’s episode on the 26th of January, Vevers will first appear as Sister Catherine Cantwell. This character is depicted as a novice nun who is readying herself for her complete induction into the Sisters of Raymond Nonnatus, and subsequently, her life as a midwife in Poplar.
Following the announcement through the show’s official social media platforms, viewers flocked to Instagram to extend a warm welcome to Vevers in the series. However, some fans showed bewilderment about the possible fate of Sister Veronica (Rebecca Gethings) and Nancy Corrigan (Megan Cusack).

One viewer remarked confidently that Nancy will return since she hasn’t gotten married yet, and it would be delightful to welcome a new midwife on-screen. Another fan expressed their opinion that the show is undoubtedly the finest on television.
A third supporter shared their excitement, and a fourth joined in, both expressing great joy over the arrival of a new character on the show. A fifth fan simply stated they loved it, while a sixth wondered if Sister Catherine would take over for Sister Veronica. However, they admitted that they had grown fond of Sister Veronica’s character.
The article also featured an interview with Vevers, who made her on-set debut this time around. In the interview, the actor expressed: “It’s been absolutely thrilling! My first week has been incredibly hectic. I hadn’t had a chance to see the set before my first week – I could only catch glimpses of it from a distance during my costume fittings.
Initially, I took a brief exploration, and I was astonished – it resembled a quaint village. At every turn, you’ll find a store or café, creating an entire community right before your eyes. You can even stroll beneath the bridge. It’s so intricate, it feels like getting lost in a labyrinth… It’s been quite fascinating to witness.
Exploring each person, understanding their respective work areas, and viewing diverse environments has been a substantial task, yet it’s been gratifying to settle in. It feels wonderful to be included in the group, becoming an integral part of this collective.
Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
