Disney’s popular ride, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, in the Magic Kingdom, ceased operations on August 4, 2025 for a substantial renovation. This move signifies another beloved attraction temporarily out of service, as part of ongoing improvements in Frontierland and Tomorrowland.

“Operations Suspended” covers the doors in a themed-wrap to alert guests of the closure.
What’s Coming to Space Ranger Spin
According to Disney, the updated ride will debut sometime in 2026 with the following changes:
In the initial setting, we’re introduced to Buddy, a helpful robot fashioned by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar. Buddy is here to assist visitors in getting ready for their upcoming mission, which includes a bit of practice with targets.
Refurbished transportation crafts adorned with Star Command hues, featuring built-in screens for displaying live scores and gaming elements during the journey.
Instead of traditional stationary firearms, the new generation is equipped with handheld laser cannons, boasting continuously active lasers, two distinct blaster hues per device for clear visual identification during action sequences, and tactile responses such as light, sound, and vibration to amplify the immersive experience.
Improved, responsive target objects that glow upon impact, instead of the stationary Z-targets. This upgrade paves the way for more dynamic gaming experiences in the future.

Disney Imagineering has submitted applications for Icarus Exhibits, which plan to put backstage setup components in place.
Another Classic Offline Amid Frontierland Development
This closure joins other major shutdowns and modifications to existing attractions in the park.

Notably, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ceased operation on January 6, 2025, for its most significant renovation in years. It is anticipated to reopen in the year 2026. Furthermore, the Walt Disney World Railroad has temporarily switched to shuttle service, traveling between Main Street USA and Fantasyland in both directions.

On July 7, 2025, Tom Sawyer Island, Rivers of America, and the Liberty Square Riverboat shut down permanently to create space for a new Cars-themed Piston Peak National Park. Consequently, significant parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square are now enclosed by construction barriers.
Why So Many Refurbishments Now?
Disney executives emphasize that these temporary closures serve a larger purpose, which is to continually modernize classic rides and maintain their technological relevance.

In simpler terms, as Michael Hundgen from Walt Disney Imagineering stated, “We’re not content with simply maintaining the status quo. Instead, we’re excited about enhancing this timeless attraction.
As a movie-loving aficionado, I’m thrilled about the upcoming enhancements, as they aim to align our experience with the cutting-edge attractions found at Disney parks across the globe. For instance, the revamped rides will be comparable to the captivating experiences like Planet Rescue in Shanghai or the exhilarating Nano Battle! in Hong Kong.
Context: Nostalgia Meets Innovation
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin first appeared in November 1998 and has been running non-stop since then. Interestingly, the foundation for its operation can be traced back to the If You Had Wings attraction from 1972, making it a significant part of Magic Kingdom’s history with deep roots.

For about three decades, enthusiasts and critics on Disney discussion boards have been discussing whether the ride necessitates an upgrade or should be closed down permanently. Some were saddened by the potential loss of another timeless attraction-even if only temporarily. Others felt a sense of relief that the theme of the ride would still relate to Toy Story, rather than being reimagined based on the Lightyear film.
Visitor Impacts and Planning Advice
Visitors planning trips between late 2025 and early 2026 might encounter a smaller variety of traditional attractions in both Frontierland and Tomorrowland, as some are temporarily closed. This could lead to extended wait times for rides at open areas, due to the shutdowns.

Visitors coming during that span should review park maps and updates prior to their arrival for the most current information. Consider discovering lesser-crowded attractions or new experiences in different areas of Magic Kingdom, which might be less busy due to renovations. Some guests might decide to utilize this period as a chance to explore Disney World’s other parks more extensively instead.
Looking Ahead
In 2026, Space Ranger Spin will once again welcome visitors with an enhanced experience that seamlessly combines old-school charm with cutting-edge interactivity. The updated Buddy pre-show, redesigned vehicles, handheld blasters, and smart targets are all geared towards providing an unparalleled gaming experience while preserving the ride’s connection to the Toy Story universe.

Simultaneously, the continuous development of Frontierland, encompassing Big Thunder and Piston Peak territory, marks a significant transition period for Magic Kingdom. Traditional experiences are being replaced by construction sites, causing some enthusiasts to ponder how the park will strike a balance between novelty and sentiment while several well-known attractions remain closed.

Even though Buzz Lightyear’s revamped ride is intended for a newer group of Space Ranger recruits, it will undoubtedly debut with renewed vigor. Upon its return, it could potentially provide a more seamless, engaging experience – journeying to infinity and beyond.
