As a huge Buffy fan, I was really heartbroken to hear the news on March 14th that Hulu had cancelled the Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale revival. It was so disappointing! And now, we’re getting more details about what could have been. Before the cancellation, I was getting so hyped – every little update about New Sunnydale just made me even more excited!
The new series would follow Nova, a teenage Slayer played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, with Sarah Michelle Gellar returning as Buffy to guide her. Directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao and written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (known for Poker Face), the show – tentatively titled New Sunnydale – appeared to have a fantastic creative team. Hulu initially planned to release the Buffy reboot around 2026.
Things took a really frustrating turn with New Sunnydale. When it was cancelled, there was a huge uproar, especially after Sarah Michelle Gellar mentioned a Hulu executive seemed to be working against it from the start. Luckily, Variety managed to get their hands on the pilot script, and reading it finally helped explain the story they were trying to tell and, honestly, why the show never got off the ground.
The Buffy Reboot Pilot Introduced A New Slayer
I’m so excited about the Buffy revival! Along with Ryan Kiera Armstrong as Nova, Deadline just announced the rest of the cast – Faly Rakotohavana, Ava Jean, Sarah Bock, and Kingston Vernes will be playing Nova’s classmates, and Daniel Di Tomasso is going to be her dad. We’re starting to get a better idea of who everyone is and what life is like in this new Sunnydale!

The new show brings the story back to Sunnydale, California. Though Buffy and her friends destroyed the town and closed the Hellmouth at the end of the original series, Sunnydale has been rebuilt. Now, its residents know about Slayers, vampires, and other dark forces. The first episode is set during “Vampire Weekend,” a festival described by Variety as a Renaissance Faire-style event celebrating the town’s troubled past.
The story revolves around Nova, a smart and introverted girl who unexpectedly gains the power to fight vampires, even defeating two at the town festival. While she starts out as a loner, by the end of the first episode, she’s gathered a group of friends who will likely help her battle both major villains and smaller threats in the future.
Important background information includes Nova’s difficult childhood – she was kidnapped when she was very young, which led her father to constantly move and become overprotective. Even more concerning, all the vampires Buffy defeated in the final episode of the show are now back. And Buffy herself doesn’t appear much throughout the story.
Buffy Summers’ Role In The New Sunnydale Pilot
Buffy actually doesn’t show up in the original script for the first episode until the very last scene. The episode starts with a fight at a club called Vampire Weekend in Sunnydale, then cuts to a beautiful fall day in New York City, where a professional-looking woman enters an office building—she works for a large insurance company.
According to Variety, the show depicts her as appearing intelligent, polished, and content working in a typical office environment, complete with a nameplate reading “Anne Summers.” This is a nod to season 3, when Buffy used her middle name and tried to live a normal life as a waitress after repeatedly saving the world. It seems she’s now pursuing her original goal from season 1: simply living an ordinary life.
In the first episode of New Sunnydale, Buffy is warned not to be late to a meeting, and she replies, “Wouldn’t want that.” However, her attempt at a normal life is quickly disrupted when she starts receiving a flood of insurance claims from Sunnydale, California.
This opening was incredibly compelling and would have definitely left fans of Buffy wanting more if the New Sunnydale revival had been made. However, Hulu’s executives felt Buffy wasn’t featured enough, and that was just one of their concerns.
Hulu’s Problems With The Buffy Reboot Pilot & Why They Scrapped It
Following feedback from Hulu, which expressed concerns about the absence of Buffy and the show attracting a younger-than-expected audience, the Zuckermans revised the original pilot script. While the new version included more of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character and aimed for a more mature feel, sources at Variety reported it was still fundamentally flawed and beyond repair.
A lot of the criticism for the perceived problems with New Sunnydale focused on director Chloé Zhao. Apparently, her quiet, understated filmmaking approach didn’t quite fit the needs of a first episode, which typically requires a lot of explanation and establishing details. People involved with the show said the pilot felt like it hadn’t been filmed with enough footage or from enough angles, potentially requiring a significant amount of reshooting.
Critics also felt the actors weren’t given enough direction. Combined with the lead actress, who was only 15 during filming, the reboot felt too juvenile and limited in scope, ultimately making it a lost cause, according to insiders.
Because of reported issues and increasing fan demand for news after filming the pilot in summer 2025, network executives set a deadline last week to determine the show’s future. Sources say this explains why the cancellation of New Sunnydale was announced the same weekend Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Ready or Not 2: Here I Come premiered and Zhao attended the Oscars, where her film Hamnet received eight nominations, including one for Best Director.
Although a reason was given for canceling the Buffy reboot, many news outlets were confused about why these problems weren’t addressed earlier, especially during casting. Charisma Carpenter posted a photo of herself from the New Sunnydale pilot, and she appears quite young, but Hulu was aware of her age when they started the project. It seems odd to cast a 15-year-old in the lead role if her appearing ‘too young’ caused so many issues.

This supports Gellar’s accusations that a Hulu executive – confirmed by Variety to be Craig Erwich, head of Hulu Originals – actively tried to sabotage the show. As Gellar explained to People, this became clear from the start when the executive openly admitted to not having watched the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This disregard for the source material ultimately hurts fans of the show.
Does The Buffyverse Have A Future At Hulu?
Despite some fans hoping a different streaming service will pick up New Sunnydale, and reports that some distributors were interested in the pilot, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is ultimately owned by 20th Television, which is part of Disney. Since Hulu doesn’t seem willing to let the show go, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see it released.
So, the main question now is what Hulu intends to do with the Buffy universe. According to Deadline, Hulu is still very enthusiastic about the Buffy franchise and is considering a new version of the show. Variety reported similar information, with sources saying Hulu is still interested in a Buffy revival, but with a fresh creative team.
Despite the potential for a new Buffy revival, insiders suggest it could easily flop. They claim the streaming platform didn’t have a clear vision for New Sunnydale. Furthermore, Sarah Michelle Gellar might not be interested in another Buffy project on Hulu, especially given her strong criticism of how New Sunnydale turned out.
It’s ironic, considering reports that Hulu really wanted more of Buffy Summers in a potential revival. This leaves the future of the Buffy universe looking bleak. Sarah Michelle Gellar, when announcing the cancellation on Instagram, jokingly said, “If the apocalypse comes… you can still beep me.” Knowing how dedicated Buffy fans are, it’s safe to say her ‘beeper’ is overflowing with messages.
